Need to know year of engine to help as their are valve train differences.....

puma 09-13-2016 08:23 AM

Correct! Here is my question, sent the heads to get resurfaced and didn't know the part of the lifter in the head could be removed, they came back all in a bag and now i don't know which one goes where. There are 2 types, one that has a bigger hole and one that has a smaller hole. From the part numbers it seems like one is made to go LH and the other RH but which goes where, they fit in both holes.

My car is a 13, it seems like in 14 they are all the same.

Anyone knows if the small holes go on the right or on left?

Well now ........ I don't know ........ but I would GUESS that they are different because one type is for the exhaust valves, the other type for the intake valves ...... just guessing ...... really.

nan from the parts list it (that we can't see clearly now i realise it) says one is for the right bank and the other is for the left bank, i just don't know which is which.

I decided to wait an ordered one from Toyota since they could get it tomorrow, then i will know which one goes where.

@Nigelr32 has experience with this.

Oh! I just noticed a few posts earlier in that thread he said the big holes are on the right side.

But which right is that? I'm wary of relative references. :(

^this^

Can't depend on the mention function notifying a user but PMs are 100%. Looks like he still logs in daily.

puma 09-13-2016 10:05 PM

Oh ok thought mention was enough, just sent him a PM, thanks guys.

It usually works but I'd feel bad if he didn't catch it. Good call, humfrz.

I'm curious as to why the right bank would be different from the left bank ....:iono:

Maybe @Nigelr32 can shed some light on that ..??

It was an early method to address uneven oil flow/pressure issues. The heads were redesigned by MY15.

Oh, OK ....... but if the heads are identical (symmetrically opposed), why would the oil flow/pressure be different from one bank to the other ..... ??

I don't know any more than that. Not enough info in the service manual and I have yet to tear into one. :(

Hi Puma,

I only too pleased to help. The larger hole goes in the left bank on all eight posts. When I say left I mean your drivers side in the USA. Later engines have all sixteen posts with small holes.

puma 09-14-2016 08:34 AM

thanks, everything i had found so far (which wasn't much) pointed towards that direction so i am happy to have an other confirmation.

thanks a lot everyone.
