Truth be told, Alcantara was engineered to be better than suede, but that was back in the 70's. The "Grand Luxe" stuff Toyota is using in the new 86 may actually be better than Alcantara since it's likely a newer product. Who knows? :)

Yeah, Alcantara is a type of suede. People just think Suede is bad, Alcantara is good. They are just different types that need different types of treatment. Alcantara is just a proven fabric that works the best for most of automotive and marine uses hence all the high end car makers use them on their high end models.
I run a company similar to JPM Coachworks (closing in 3 days btw) in LA. So I'm always super curious about interior stuff. Sat in a new 86 and felt the fabric on the dash, it's very similar to Alcantara, I thought it was Alcantara guess they are different and have a different name too. Interesting.
That picture in the first page makes it look like it's more of suede than Alcantara.
