Almost f**ked by a nanny
 

I was at a stop sign on a side street waiting to make a right onto another side street - light traffic, and this route is a regular one.

The Dodge minivan approaching from my left was comfortably distant and I made my turn. The street I was turning onto has an uphill grade, the pavement was hot, and I heard two distinct but seemingly contradictory sounds - my tire(s) squealing and the abs buzzing.

I was making very little forward progress under these conditions, to the degree that Dodge man was up my chuff very quickly, so I immediately signalled right, pulled out of the way of his van and middle finger, and resumed travel.

I turned traction control completely off, sport on, went around the block, made the turn again, and the acceleration was dramatically different - a little tire squeal, but no retarded forward momentum.

I think that the nannies are effective generally, but their intervention can occasionally be problematic.

The oddest thing is that I've also made this particular turn in the rain a dozen times and never experienced anything remotely similar.

Read your thread title, expected a sordid tale of sex, lies and broken homes and one happy nanny!!

Some people may argue that you should leave more space when pulling into traffic. However, like "proper" following distances, the real world seldom accommodates ideal.

I still think the nannies will help average drivers more often then they hurt, but the irony of a saftey system endangering its user does not escape me either.

Ya, I've had similar experiences, although not with my FR-S.

With my wife's Saturn. Turning left onto a busy street, pointing up hill, street grades to the other side, wheel spins, power is cut ...... I'm looking like an ass .......:bonk:

Back-in-the-day, my car would have been screeching tires, peeling rubber and going sideways ....... at least the other drivers would have know I WAS trying to get out of their way .......:mad0259:

Put the joke a side, I never had this issue. It might be do with angle of the car. Like you said, it was lil uphill, so you might had it wrong angle and you might of loosen the inner wheel to let it wheel spin.

I have had it happen once under almost identical circumstance. I fought the urge to just give it more gas (what you would normally do to go faster) and instead just took my foot off the gas for a split second. The nannies cut out and I was back to accelerating at a normal pace with only the slightest loss of speed through the whole event. The hardest part of the whole thing was convincing my foot to lift instead of push harder as the car behind me started to approach. It felt so wrong but worked beautifully.

Too much throttle is easy to modulate, but the nannies never give you a chance to do so.

When I competed in the Chevrolet "rev it up" challenge, getting the vehicles (cobalts and corvettes) to accelerate out of corners without waking the nannies was its own separate skill that average drivers should not be expected to have mastered. (I honestly was not that great at it)

The bottom line is that the nannies are not there to maximize acceleration....and maximum acceleration is sometimes needed on short notice.

Yeah... a lot of ppl don't know to just let the gas pedal go & let the tire traction back to get things rolling. Just like sliding in AWD. When you slide in (ice/snow) in AWD, don't let go the gas and aim where you want to go & let the car do the work... but ppl's general reaction to hit the brake. That's how ppl wreck it.

Exactly. Fighting the nannys is a losing proposition just let the condition that allowed them to kick in go away and carry on. Use them don't treat them use you.

That the nannies require the driver to intentionally suppress instinctive reaction insults my driving sensibility.

In all driving conditions, pedal dance mode is the most predictable mode of operation of this vehicle.

I reserve judgement for the 2017 nannies as I have not yet driven that system.

It bothered me enough drive with VSC sport on when it's raining and Trac Off button for 3 seconds when it's dry.

I could swear this was the title of a video I've seen.

I admit I provocativized the thread title somewhat.

Honestly, there was lots of space between me and the oncoming van - it wasn't as though I pulled out and had to gun it to get up to speed quickly. It was just a weird combination of circumstances - I didn't even think to let off the gas, but that's my inexperience with these systems I suppose.

I'll chalk it up to live and learn, and thankfully no harm no foul.
