Slimline Plates Plate Bracket

Posting this in its own thread as it seems to be lost in the other thread.

Here are some renders of an early prototype of a bracket for slimline plates.

The goal was to create an OEM looking plate bracket that also acted as a frame for the plate. So as you can see the design itself is based on the OEM bracket, matching the exact body contours/curvatures of the car.

It will bolt directly onto the existing holes without any modifications required. We've also tried to cover up the bottom two holes (inside the grille) from the OEM bracket, however, if someone who already has the car can remove their plate and bracket and take a picture we can then be certain we have successfully done so.

Anyways, we're still not sure whether we'll put these into production, let us know how many of you guys will be interested in possibly buying one of these and we can probably work something out.

Update (9/7/12):

We'll most likely be producing two versions in the following sizes:
  • 372x100mm (Fits all slimline plates in all states)
  • 372x84mm (Fits NSW premium metallic, coloured and white plates, also the smaller custom SA slimline plates as well)
We've picked these sizes as they cater for most if not all slimline plates across Australia.

Z86 07-08-2012 06:42 PM

Possibly interested. What price (ballpark), and what dimension for the plate?

Nardi330 07-08-2012 06:47 PM

What size will it be?

I think NSW has a smaller slimline plate than QLD and our plate won't fit if this is made for NSW plate.

+1

Although must be compatiable with Victorian slimline plates.

eckoflyte 07-08-2012 08:40 PM

ill definitely be interested in this. +1.

eleu2166 07-08-2012 10:02 PM

We can produce them in any dimensions if we get the necessary numbers for each size.

In terms of pricing, we're working on the cheapest possible pricing without sacrificing quality. Will keep you guys posted.

We might also be looking into producing some carbon fibre ones as well.

Sutty 07-08-2012 10:17 PM

Interested for Qld slimline plates.

sticky 07-08-2012 10:25 PM

If you can price it <$100 I would be interested.

DriftEightSix 07-09-2012 12:08 AM

How many would you need to do a run on a perticular size?

I have a different size plate wouldn't mind an OEM looking holder for it.

Nafe 07-09-2012 02:29 AM

Also would be keen for a slimiline plate holder for QLD size. Pending price/quality obviously

Lakin Plates here: http://www.lakinplates.com.au/index....54_107_767_768

Already does a plate holder specifically for the 86 and if you tell them plates you are putting on, they can even do the right plate covers for them (I've ordered mine for QLD slimlines).

The only problem with the Lakin plate is that at the moment it is not shaped like the OEM model fitted to the car and doesn't mould around the bumper, the bottom of the plate has two legs on it that fasten in to the two lower bolts holes in the grill.

Panman 07-09-2012 04:44 AM

Yeh, I looked that aspect but TBH, I'll paint it black and it'll be next to invisible on Dark Grey with black QLD slimlines on it, and loads better than the factory plate mount.

Thanks Sutty!

We've looked into all possible sizes as well. If you look closely at those sizes there are only really two that we care about:
  • 372x100mm (SA is 371x100mm, so still fits)
  • 372x84mm (SA is 371x83mm, so still fits)
These two sizes will cover all slimline plates in all states, and also the premium metallic plates in NSW, and coloured/white plates in NSW.

Like Sutty said, our bracket will sit flush with the contour of the body. If we wanted to we could easily go the simpler route and make a plate bracket like the Lakin ones, but we wanted to cater for those who wanted an OEM look.

Excellent, I'll be very interested to see them when they come out. :)

Also keen..

Sutty 07-20-2012 05:15 AM

Any idea if you are still going to go ahead with these slimline plate brackets?

eleu2166 07-20-2012 05:41 AM

We are.

We're currently working on the master/prototype. Should be done over the next week or so.

Have you got your Lakin plate holders yet? If so can you post some pics of the front plate bracket so I can see what they look like.

Got the plate bracket this week, will take a couple of piccies tomorrow - blacked out they'll be invisible. The covers will work perfectly.

No it doesnt look like the OEM holders but it does look good.

Tobz 07-20-2012 11:32 AM

TOtally in!

mushilea 07-20-2012 11:40 AM

I would definitely be in for a carbon fibre bracket. I will keep a close eye on this!

Piccies below:

1. Plate mount - note it has the top bolt holes bent back to fit the bumper holes.

2. Plate Mount with Plate cover in place - will not be able to see the mount at all as it wraps round the edges

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...ham/Plate2.jpg

3. Mounting post that goes back to the bolt point in the grille. I'll be PlastiDipping this black so it's invisible

4. Mounting post fitted.

Would be nice to see pics of the plate mounted on the car
Will the metal rub on the bumper plastic and cause damage?
BTW what does it cost?

Sutty 07-21-2012 12:58 AM

Panman, can you do a side shot to show how much the bracket sticks out from the back of the main plate, or alternatively of it actually mounted on the front bumper.

There's rubber dimples on the back to protect bumper, and it's curved to the shape so shouldn't touch.

Price is around $90 at www.lakinplates.com.au

Panman 07-21-2012 01:33 AM

First Photo shows mount end on with the lower bracket. Mount is curved to the shape of the bumper.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...ham/Plate5.jpg

Back of the mount with bracket attached - dimples at the top to stop contact between the mount and bumper.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...ham/Plate6.jpg

Slightly different angle - As soon as my car comes I will post some photos of it fitted.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...ham/Plate7.jpg

Hope this helps

Sutty 07-21-2012 01:42 AM

:coolpics:
Thanks Panman, that looks a lot better than I thought.
I was thinking that the lower legs were going to stick out a mile, but like you said I think that they will be barely noticeable once painted black.
How heavy is the bracket, looks like a fairly solid chuck of aluminium.

I was happier with it than I thought I was going to be. Bracket isn't that heavy, but is fairly solid - certainly feels like it won't be going anywhere in a hurry (Except when the car is :burnrubber:)

m0nty 07-25-2012 12:27 AM

Definitely interested in the NSW slim line mount.

nix 07-25-2012 02:36 AM

I wouldn't want that lakin plate anywhere near my paint job. You could coat it or put a layer or rubber behind it I guess.

The metal doesn't touch your paint work with the Lakin plates.
There are rubber bumpers at the top of the plate and rubber washers on the screws.
Check out Lakin plates website, some videos there showing how they fit on the car.
If eleu2166's bracket isn't available when I get my 86 I will be getting Lakin's plates.

nix 07-25-2012 03:44 AM

I saw that but if you have a 2kph fender bender? I've had idiots reverse into my front bar twice without even a scratch with plastic mounts.

I'd be confident in a 2KM/H fender bender (Do we have fenders in Australia?). Having actually looked at and held this thing - rather than judging on the interwebz it'll protect my bumper better than the standard plastic thingo It's got beefy aluminium standoffs which bolt directly to the factory holes.

And it won't look shit while it's doing it.

nix 07-25-2012 05:17 AM

Cool, hopefully no one tests it out. :)
