Interesting Scam?
A dude is selling a telescope on Craigslist. Yesterday, Monday the 15th, I tell the him I want to see the telescope but can't get there until Wednesday. Today, Tuesday, he emails back and says he's showing it to someone on Friday or Saturday, and if that guy doesn't want it, he'll let me know. I think that's a bit strange, first come, first served, etc, but I also admire it that maybe he gave his word to the guy for whatever reason, and will wait until the weekend to show it.
Thinking that maybe he misunderstood me about which Wednesday, I tell him that I want to look at it tomorrow, the 17th, and if it's like he described, I'll give him his asking price, $300. He tells me if I can't wait, he'll show it to me tomorrow and sell it to me for $350. Never heard of this before. Scam, or am I wrong? |
whether its a scam or not, he is being a k#nt. Rather just forget it
|
It may not be a "scam" in that the seller can sell it for what he wants to.
However, IMHO the guy is a jerk. humfrz |
Some craigslisters are too nice...sometimes I'm too nice and hold things for people who promise to buy/get it and they never show....
I've been buying/selling/free since 2007ish. |
I don't think it's a scam, sounds like some one else was a head of you to see it. The extra $50 is to make himself feel better about bumping off the dude ahead of you. That's all. That's what I think.

Im with AC. Maybe he told a guy he would show it to him this weekend and would feel better telling him "Hey sorry but this other guy offered me $50 over my asking price"
For all you know he could then go to the other guh and say "If you give me $400 I'll hold it for you" tl;dr Not a scam imo |
If you REALLY want this, go to his house to buy it with 300 cash. It would probably be a sell. Craigslisters are really shitty and I wouldn't even want to meet someone at their personal house.

And if I lived in town I'm might have used it to make sure my neighbors' apartment windows were clean, or to check on incoming boats with car parts, but I don't. So it's the skies for me. I thought it was a low-level way to scam an extra $50, but I guess not. Thanks for the input, guys. Something I see on CL more and more is people who only list an email address to reply to, then don't respond to emails. I don't get it. |
I'm with AC on this. It IS first come, first serve. Everyone has a right to check it out before they buy it. He asked 5o check it out. If you're a working adult, coming before the weekend isn't always an option. It's considered courteous to do that for people. There's also clearly no scam to this, just a price hike for you to cut in line.
