Clicking noise in steering column
So about 2 weeks ago I started to notice this clicking noise in the steering wheel column area. Here are the details below.
1. Only happens when I move the auto shifter left to right when in Park 2. Sound only happens when the power is on or car is on & no sound when car is off. I took it to a local dealership and the technician says it sounds like the shift interlock is engaging but he doesn't know why it's so loud & has never heard of anything like this before. The dealership also wanted to charge me $129/hr just to look at it and told me that it wasn't covered under warranty even though my car is only 4yrs old. What a joke. I'll be taking to other dealerships to see what they say. I uploaded a video of the sound. https://youtu.be/9AF_4WVfrpo Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions to this? |
Well, it does sound like some sort of electro-magnetic thing trying to open/close.
You might try jiggling the steering wheel while you're moving the shift lever back and forth, maybe it will fall into place ...?? Maybe disconnect the battery to see it will right itself .. ?? Redneck fix ...... just don't move the shifter lever when it's in park ........ ;) I wouldn't worry too much about it ........ the worst case is that when you are going into a high speed curve, you hit the shifter lever and the steering wheel locks up .......:eyebulge: humfrz |
No, never heard that. Just checked mine and no sounds. If everything is working fine, just leave it alone?

Just make sure it's not the steering column lock. Yikes!
Hold your gearshift lever in either of the positions and turn the wheel to see if it drops in. edit: Oops, @humfrz beat me to it. Yeah, what he said. ;) |
