Sambo's Hot Lava

Okay, so I am not your typical car guy if such exists.

I have always always loved cars. In grade 2, I decided that I wanted to work with cars and become a mechanical engineer. I am almost 38 and I have been an automotive/mechanical engineer for about 18 years. Yes, I graduated young and yes, I may very well be more of a nerd than a car guy.

I have owned many cars; some even sporty like a Prelude SRV (VTEC), but those have given way to more practical family cars over the last decade.

About a year ago, I started getting the itch for a sports car and thought through my normal course of checking the used ads from anything like old Porsches or NSXs to BMWs. I even fantasized about a GTR or an Ariel Atom, but I couldn't justify the cost or impracticality.

I had narrowed it down to a small, light, nimble fun car. Ultimately, what I was looking for was great handling dynamics. By late fall last year, it was a Lotus Elise, a Miata or an S2000. I am not big on convertibles, but these were the options. A car guy friend of mine suggested I wait until the FR-S or BRZ come out for the price of the S2000 to drop. That was honestly the first that I had heard of the twins.

I read, viewed all the reviews that all of you must have also devoured. I had never owned a new car, let alone a new car that is the offspring of a new partnership. I was thinking that this must be it for me, especially with the added quasi seats in the back for my small children. A short test drive in an AT confirmed that.

I was first to put a deposit at my neighborhood dealership and after several delays, I got the Hot FR-S last week. What a blast this thing is.

It is no where near perfect, but it is so perfect for me. The handling balance is impeccable. I now look for the most # of turns on the way anywhere. My favorite are right turns on green lights. I keep alternating taking them in 2nd or 3rd gear.

I can't wait to break it in, so I can explore the limits better. I am also considering tint, badge delete, a supercharger and somewhat stickier tires.

Keep enjoying the twistiest of roads.
