After Market Seats - how low can u go !

Sorry guy's, but I'm not yet ready to throw in the towel on this one..
I need to sit lower in the FRS ! (I'm 6' 3", but with a long back)
I posted a few Months ago looking for lowering solutions with the stock seats - the consensus seemed to be not possible ..After Market Seats only option.
OK. So now I'm asking WHICH After Market Seats have worked for you Taller guy's out there ? or maybe Guy's who need extra Helmet clearance..

Ideally I would be looking for a 'Street Seat' maybe slightly wider than stock, but at least as comfortable (Recaro maybe ?). If the solution is to remove the rails & bolt the seat directly in a fixed position then so be it.
I'm not looking for much here - maybe 2" lower or so...just so that I can feel like I'm sitting IN rather than ON the Car.

Would really appreciate your feedback - thanks !

hmmmm........off the top of my head, I'd suggest you take the stock seat out, make a platform for it and bolt that puppy straight to the floorboard.........;)

There might be some lowering seat rails available in Japan. Many of Japanese speed shops usually offer the lower version of the seat rail for the lowest driving height due to the helmet interference (track use) and also for better feedback from the car.

Let me check the Hyper Rev book and I will let you know.

Spec C Wannabe - appreciate it thanks.
humfrz - thanks for the suggestion. Ideally if the seats coming out anyway I would rather replace it with something a little larger.

How thin are the stock seat bases? I've done a foam-ectomy in one of my old miatas, it involves pulling the upholstery off of the seat base and going to town on the foam with a carving knife. It was pretty straightforward on that car, and good for an inch or so... May very well not be feasible in the twins, haven't really looked at it, but it was semi common on the Miata board.

@mdec;

I am running Recaro Spg and Nagisa rails and it work great for me. I am a little over 6 feet and I also have a longer torso and it clear with a helmet pretty easy.

At the lowest setting I had about half a foot with helmet. Other people who work on my car had a hard time driving if under 5'10. My wife complain she can not drive my car and said I did it on purpose so she can not drive it. :wub:

@mdec;

Was your head or hair on the ceiling with stock seats?

mdec 08-15-2016 03:34 PM

with stock seats (at their lowest setting) I have about an inch or so to spare so no room for helmet. Would be interesting to know whether Recaro's spg are a viable as a Daily Drive ...how do they compare comfort wise to stock seats they look a little narrower. my track time will be very limited

My hair would touch the headliner sometimes depending how spikey my hair would be with the stock seat.

aftermarket seats will only be lower than the stock seats (at lowest setting), if you get a fixed back bucket seat (recaro spg, buddy clup p1, bride zeta 3, etc.) with side mounts. this allows you to mount the seat from the sides letting the bottom/under part of the seat sit in between the side mounts and basically almost, if not already, touching the floor.

stock seats are already low as the rails it mounts to directly are pretty flat, but the only way to go lower than the rails is to have the seat sit between the rails and not above it.

Hmm, my hair is always just barely touching the ceiling, giving me maybe a quarter inch of space, how much room do youhave between the ceiling and your helmet?

8r6 - thanks for your comments ..so if after market reclining seats (Cobra Le mans etc)are not going to do the job that just leaves fixed back side mounted buckets as the only solution ? if that's the case then its back to my earlier question - do these type of seats work for DD ?

HUMFRZ - mentioned bolting stock seats direct to the floor with a custom mount- is that something anyone has tried ?

ZionsWrath 08-15-2016 08:25 PM

I have a nice rub mark from my helmet on the headliner. If I don't adjust the back of seat just right it rubs significantly. When adjusted right it is like 1mm clearance when stationary

I have my stock seat at lowest height and I am 5'10. I feel for you tall guys.
