New Engine Help

Sadly my engine is dead. I'll get into the specifics later when I have more time.

Being told that a replacement would cost me 6 grand including labor. Solid deal? Or should I look elsewhere and or look into a swap, ect. I figured now would be the time to consider more power.

Any bit of info helps.

$6k? That's pretty steep. Dealer quote?

If you have a garage and some tools you can do it your self. Save some labor fee. Of not, shop around, call other shops get quotes.

You can get an used engine itself for around $2500-$3000.

If your worried about money, ask your bank for a personal loan.

Now that all depends how fucked your engine is. If it's just some bad rings and nothing major go for a rebuild. Cost may be much lower. If it has a hole in the block , well your boned.

Define dead. What exactly went wrong? You may be able to save a few bucks if you can reuse some parts of the engine.

Man that it expensive af!!! I have seen used motors going for about 2-3k. That would be an awesome learning experience yet unfortunate but you know what I mean! Especially if you have like a mentor, someone who knows there way around a car.

$6k is a very reasonable quote. I paid $5800 to get a new engine (EJ205) installed in my WRX last year.

While you *can* save $2k if you install it yourself, you really have to ask yourself if the time is worth it.

It's all relative. Think of what a BMW engine costs. I'd contact tuners. See what they can do. Element Tuning sounds good to me.

Is the replacement new or used? Short block and reusing parts of the old engine or a long block? Or a rebuild of your existing engine? Those will all have a big impact on price.

If it's a factory long block with dealer install retaining full OEM warranty compliance for $6k? I doubt you'll find better bang for your buck. OEM longblock is ~$4k iirc and labor coming to about $2k is not unreasonable (although expensive).

If it's a short block (they're rebuilding the engine) and they're feeding you bullshit about it being goodwill and voided warranty don't bother imo.

If you're out of warranty, dealership is leaving a bad taste in your mouth, shop around to independant repair places in your area, you should be able to get the cost down to ~$4k if you're willing to take a used engine/new shortblock.

(post on the regional subforum for shop recommendations, you're in SF maybe The Racers Line will be your best bet for feel good customer service and someone who cares about doing a good job, but maybe not the cheapest)

Being told it would be a used engine, I'll get more details today/tomorrow on it.

I'm going to have another shop look into to tell me exactly what is wrong with the current engine. Info I have now is very vague. The knock sounds terrible though when it's fired up, just not sure if there is a hole in it or what.

Thank you all for the info, I'll reply back with more specifics once I do a bit more digging. Ya'll have given me a lot to work with! Thanks!

Side note: How much is an engine swap going for these days if I did want more power?

I vote you just drop 10-15k and build a motor. Why not put a Trust or HKS stroker kit in it??
