My newest car part

New exhaust headers showed up today. Old rear bank header had a clogged catalyst in the precat section just below the pipes. Caused a spun bearing in my motor. :( New headers are Nautilus Performance Shorty headers with an MSDS collector and axle bend and a flex pipe. No cats!!!!! Going to run it like that for a few days with a dumped midpipe until my straight piping arrives. Then I'm cutting the exhaust at the collector and running duals straight back with two Vibrant resonators and a Magnaflow X-pipe before ending with angle cut tips akin to an old Mustang or Camaro. Mazda Muscle. :)

OLD EXHAUST (not my pic btw)

NEW EXHAUST (my living room as well)

Look sweet! That's sucks that it spun the bearing. Are you planning to do some internal mods (pistons, crank, etc) while fixing the bearing or just keep it OEM? Also if you make it catless isn't gonna pull a CEL? Also hope you don't have white Mazda6 cuz it will make your rear bumper yellow

I'm guessing you have welding machine to do all those things... I envy you

please explain how your exhaust caused a spun bearing.

Alrighty. No I don't have a welder but have access to a good garage. Internals are already built up somewhat. The motor came stock with forged bits, but I upgraded bearings and rods so that this won't happen again. Also using a better oiling system to prevent the issue.

CEL is fine. I'm using an o2 simulator and most of the time, these don't throw the CEL anyway. The PCM on these cars are finicky. Some people throw codes, some don't. lol. She's blue btw.

No prob. The design of the OEM headers as you can see left the catalytic converter VERY close to the exhaust port. When I bought the car, I didn't know the spark plugs were in as bad of shape as they were. I was told they were new, yet there were no side or center electrodes left on 2. How they managed to last any length of time is beyond me. Anyway, the fuel didn't always ignite in the cylinder, but would ignite in the converter. That melted the converter, destroying the ceramic material inside. It essentially clogged up and did two things. It wouldn't let gases escape as easily, so the engine got hotter. It also allowed some material to escape back into the engine via backpressure. Idk specifics, but it made it into my oil and somewhat clogged my sump as well, leading to spun bearings and a cracked rod. Its been 6 months since she's been on the road. I've been broke. So far I have 2200 in the motor and 1000 in the headers. junkyard longblock with Clevite77 main and rod bearings, Caprillo rods, and a crank kit. Ugh. lol.

How many miles on that car or what spark plugs? Those shits are fucked lol

1GoZoom 03-28-2011 02:14 PM

They CLAIMED when i took it in for service that the plugs were nearly new. Me being dumb assumed the stealership had checked. nope. Unfortunately, I didn't have them saying that in writing so i was fucked when the motor went kaboom. It has 124k miles and I'm pretty sure those were the ORIGINAL plugs. Haha. i only put 5k miles on it since buying it. Its been sitting 6 out of the 8 months I've owned it. :(

Nice, the water pump went out on the soup, so I took the time to upgrade to electrical water pump and electric fans, and some other Lil cooling goodies!

That is one nice looking car. Here is what I'm saving for right now.

Uh I'm not so sure on this.

there should have been multiple DTCs stored and the CEL illuminated, possibly flashing.

RRnold 03-29-2011 05:16 PM

It guess this qualifies as a common problem with Ford... I mean Mazda 6's
