Anyone know the typical temps on the OEM header heat shield?
 
Has anyone by chance put a temp probe on the OEM Heat shield surrounding the stock header? I have searched here and found the calculated CAT temperatures of 800-1100°F which is close but not the same thing.

I'm trying to determine if it's safe to wrap the top of the OEM heat shield with Lava Mat ( rated at 1200°F continuous and 2000°F intermittent use) or other heat rejection product - or whether this is a fire hazard

No point; you want to wrap the header itself.

Typical temps under street use are 1000-1400F; under hard driving it can be as high as 1900F.

@CSG Mike, first off sorry for the thread necro, but I thought your background could help shed some light here.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to keep my under hood temps down in Florida with a header and overpipe. My passenger rear coil pack doesn’t like the extra heat one bit so It m back on the stock header for now. I’m eyeing up an Ace setup but I want to have a proper thermal management plan first. I have insulation on the oil pan already. I’ve read heatwrapping the header and overpipe is the best for keeping temperature down, but some sources claim it retains water in wet climates, causing corrosion. I personally don’t see how the water doesn’t instantly evaporate with those temps, but all I can find is anecdotal accounts and no data. Is a thick ceramic coating like swain tech better?

Ceramic helps, Wrapping helps, Hood vents help. As far as corrosion I guess it could accelerate it but pick you poison of what one is better.

You want the thinnest ceramic that works.

i had my headers coated, wrapped them, and used Cool-it Hi-Heat Coating on the wrap. did it for years on the drift car and worked like a charm so figured it would do fine with the street car with some spirited canyon drives:)
