"Genuine" reverse camera

Hi all, just thought I'd share this with you so you won't fall into the same trap.

I purchased a red GTS 3 weeks or so ago and opted for the reverse camera.
The aftermarket lady did a spiel about how I should go for the camera instead of sensors because it'll look better on a sportscar like this etc.
I was assured that it wouldn't be an aftermarket product, it'll be a well-integrated genuine camera.

On the contract it even says "genuine replacement camera".

For $595 this is what I got:

Obviously I was quite disappointed. If I knew it was going to be this I would've opted for sensors or most likely nothing at all.
It's a tiny car and the purpose was to stop car borrowers from scratching my car in our tiny car park, which is what happened to my last car.

Called up the dealer and was told that this is as genuine as it gets and there's no other options.

Now, I'm pretty sure most of you wouldn't be happy with this job so what would you do in this situation?

Genuine what? Genuine Eclipse Camera? yes. =( I'd be pretty pissed at the dealership for misrepresenting something....

Nardi330 07-05-2012 10:12 PM

personally i don't have issue with the brand of the camera as Eclipse is a quality Japanese brand and likely an OEM for other Toyotas. it is definitely a better cam than no-brand-made-in-china stuff.... as far as i can see, there is no factory option for rear camera in Japan and audio equipements (except for speakers) are dealer fitted over there.

however i must agree the installation could have been better. i think it sticks out too much.

how is its integration with the headunit? is the video quality good? turn on, turn off correctly when you put in/out of reverse?

i would sooner drill the bumper than have the lens flush , that looks ewww to me.

Can you take a photo from a little further back?

I'd have no problem with an Eclipse branded camera if that's what I agreed to. In which case I would've gone to an aftermarket installer for a bit cheaper.

The whole point was to get a genuine Toyota option which the dealer assured me was NOT an aftermarket product.

Installation was terrible, it's held on by double sided tape. Will let you know what happens, will call them again a bit later today

What the fuck.

I'd call up and bitch up a storm.

That's so dodgy man.. definitely call and sort it out!

How's the quality of it anyway?

She'll give me a call back, still waiting...
It's okay I suppose, it's pointed badly so it's not a center view and it's easily disturbed by rain.

Appears on the screen instantly when I put it into reverse which is nice, but no guiding lines

Nardi330 07-06-2012 03:28 AM

i think guiding line is from the headunit and not the camera? (my Alpine HU + cam on my other car is like this)

correct me if i'm wrong.

I believe so, it's in the software. Either way, it doesn't come up and I can't see an option to turn it on. Would be nice but not a big deal

atledreier 07-06-2012 03:44 AM

Now I see why Toyota Norway said "there is a camera, but we won't add it as an option". That looks like c**p.

Sambalam 07-06-2012 04:37 AM

Thanks for posting this, I was considering adding one on but definitely not if its just "bunged on" like that

Matizzay 07-06-2012 10:25 AM

no good
