Telescopic Steering Wheel - IHMO
This is not something I see mentioned on the forum, so I just want see if anyone else feel the same way.
I'm slightly disappointed that the telescopic steer wheel doesn't come out as much as I like. Fully aware that this car is made for asian size, being a tall asian myself at a slender 6'2, I can't help but to think that had they made the wheel reaches out 2 more inches, I'd have ZERO complaint about the car's ergonomics. My seating position, compare to most people my height, is about 2 clicks closer to the wheel. I like to keep my elbows bent no more than 90 degrees. I've sat in a fair bit of sports car with this functionality and has never found the reach to be a problem. What bugs me is seeing how my family's 2012 Imprezza has this feature as well and the max length it reaches out is just perfect with my seating position... while the Toyobaru doesn't...??? What do you other giants think? Just enough? not enough? evil doings by corporate Toyota? or don't care? |
I totally know what you mean.... I'm 6 feet and if I set the seat to my legs, the wheel isn't at the right place, but if I sit according to my arms, my legs are all contorted...
I've pretty much gotten used to this as a fact of life, so I've learned to ignore it, but every time I get into a new car, I start thinking about how to fab a spacer for steering wheel.... |
Yeah. I'm 5'10" and was disappointed in its "reach."

I'll have a more complete response in 2 weeks after I take delivery and get to start dialing in my driving position, but after having sat in a show-room car for a few minutes I'm optimistic. I'm 6'4" and seldom have a good driving position, usually due to headroom issues causing me to have to sit leaning back more than I'd like (sunroofs are evil for me). This, in turn, adds to any reach issues for the steering wheel and/or shift knob. I was very impressed with the seating in the BRZ and my ability to sit as upright as I'd like.

Just going to throw some logic into the mix. Your overall height really isn't the important factor in this, and barely serves as a good estimation.
Inseam would probably be a better measuring stick as the length of your legs dictates how far you can sit comfortably from the pedals/wheel then your overall height. Of course inseam alone isn't enough of an indicator either, but you really need both. Inseam and arm length of course would be the most accurate, but how many people know their arm length? For instance, me and my best friend are the same height at 5"10. Though he has a 34" inseam and mine is only 33". His arms are also a good inch or two longer then mine (I know all this because he was my best man at my wedding and we got our measured for our tuxes together). You wouldn't think a couple of inches would make that much of a difference but it does. Our seat positions are very different. |
The car felt so much like my S2000 just sitting in it that I had forgotten the wheel was even adjustable for a few days :)
I'm 5'11" and I have the wheel as close to the dash as possible, so it doesn't bother me. I keep the seat back fairly straight and the seat back to the proper driving position, no problems here. |
6'2" here, never noticed and I haven't adjusted the steering at all since delivery.

6'1" here, no issues, have it all the way out and the seat about 2 notches from farthest back. The seat back is pretty far down as well, I need to drive with just a bit of a bend to the elbow's. At near 90 degrees, it feels like I'm chewing on the steering wheel! :)

Seems like all the Scions and Toyotas don't provide enough reach. I think its a safety thing. They don't want people to close to the wheel if the airbag inflates or they are just designed for short people.

All cars should be able to replicate a NASCAR steering and seating setup. =)
