If the FT-86 is a fail...what will you do?

Been lurking on this forum and I was wondering what everyone is going to do if the FT-86 turns out to be a fail. Everyone that's on this forum is probably a fan of lightweight, 2+2 RWD coupes (which seem to be almost extinct now). So, what is going to be a deal breaker (specs, prices, badging, name, etc) and what will you do if it comes to that? For me,

Fails if: base price greater than $25,000 or is over 2800 lbs (curb weight).

Plan: Get a used 370Z, S2000 or new RX-8 or new MX-5. Maybe wait for the rumored RX-7 revival.

What about you guys?

ichitaka05 03-23-2011 12:20 PM

go w Subie. Simple as that

C-Bone 03-23-2011 12:28 PM

Ill save for a MKIV Supra Turbo, I said a while ago to myself that this would probably be the only car I'd get instead of a supra but would still like one someday

Edit: I was thinking if both Toyota and subie fail

WingsofWar 03-23-2011 12:39 PM

1. burn Toyota USA HQ down to the ground during business hours.

2. Dance naked around the burning building reeking of molten flesh

3. Piss on the ashes

4. ????

5. Profit

I_AM 03-23-2011 12:40 PM

keep driving my Mr-S and telling myself wow why can't Toyota build more lightweight RWD cars...and also hope my wife doesn't have kids soon haha.

TRDMAN 03-23-2011 12:56 PM

Sti or 370z

whaap 03-23-2011 01:23 PM

If it comes out resembling the phase II rather than the phase I it would be a fail as far as I'm concerned. I try to avoid buying cars whose designs I don't like. I would just keep my NB Miata.

SUB-FT86 03-23-2011 01:42 PM

If I like the feel of the FT86 and it provides the right amount of power for the money I would buy it over anything in its price range. I don't need 300+ hp in a 2800 lb car but I would like at least 240 hp/200-240 tq from a 2.0liter D/I boxer turbo and still be able to achieve 31 mpg on the highway for around 25k base.

If this doesn't happen I would get a gently used 2011 3.8 Track Genesis coupe.

These are the only 2 cars I care about under 40k and the only 2 sites that I'm a member of. I want to think positive about the FT.

Donson 03-23-2011 02:05 PM

In this case, I'll buy a Nissan GT-R V-Spec... ;)

Ye. :/ Payin' for med school. Wee~~ -__-

Or buy new camera bodies and or lens.

Save up for a luxery performance or the subie version. If toyota can't make this car work out.. I slightly lose hope for them. :l How hard is it to listen to customer feedback? :iono:

Apparently very difficult, I went to a business seminar in LA once. One of the things that I remember they teach about marketing is, "the customer doesn't know what he/she wants, we tell them what they want." Im not sure if Toyota would follow suit, but much of corporate america and the media in general are structured like this.

When it comes to cars, the only people that care worth a damn are the people who are deeply into either the culture or the industry. Which is still only a fraction of total consumers.

Dark 03-23-2011 02:20 PM

Evo X and enjoy my life for awhile and get another beast.

Dragonitti 03-23-2011 02:46 PM

Probably look for a used RB/SR20 built motor 240sx, or a Twin Turbo 350z. If not, I might go STI/Evo

All the while continuing to build my track toy.

That is definitely a wise decision in which I 100% support. Do it now while you're young. I often thought about a career change, taking the LSAT and persuing IP Law since I already have an EE degree. I know its a huge step both financially and mentally and sort of weighing the odds out since I'm already in a good situation.

iff2mastamatt 03-23-2011 03:12 PM

Probably a 370z.

Zaku 03-23-2011 03:47 PM

as terrible as this is going to sound, I'll prolly sit quivering in a corner till Honda decides to grow it's balls back and make s2k successor or a better CRZ but that torsion beam set up and no back seat really kills it for me. Make my old EP3 looks like a treasure....or a Integra replacement. I know farfetch dreams but I still dreaming the impossible dream.

Midship Runabout 03-23-2011 04:11 PM

Used elise.
Or build a starlet.

enc0re 03-23-2011 04:13 PM

BMW 128i for me.

aliphian 03-23-2011 04:15 PM

Used Genesis Coupe 2.0T then mod the shit out of it.

Shevon 03-23-2011 04:24 PM

If subie version offered in US I will go that route if Toyota fails and can't have subie I will get a 370z

Aki 03-23-2011 04:40 PM

Deal breaker for me is if it's heavy (over 2900 lbs).

Still not sure if it's worth buying though, gotta see how it drives, the engine output, etc.

NESW20 03-23-2011 04:53 PM

i will go on with my life. :word:

gt-jerome 03-23-2011 04:59 PM

ft86 can't be a fail :)

if the price is 50.000 € ... ok, not for me :) I love MX5... maybe a used miata... or BMW1, just for rear wheel driving :)

chulooz 03-23-2011 05:00 PM

I guess I would fully swap and build my Impreza coupe.

ryun84 03-23-2011 05:40 PM

If Both Toyota (Scion) and Subaru models are fail, then I think I'll go for an STI. Since the new Impreza is coming out soon, the timing should be right to purchase when they try to clear out the current models. But I still hope this car isn't fail.

Fortunate Few 03-23-2011 06:21 PM

i could go for 2+2 or just 2 sets :iono:
If mazda some how magically put out the next rotary vehicle around the same time as the ft-86 then it would be a hard choice for me depending on price and mpg from the mazda. I drive an rx8 now and an FD rx7 is my dream car but owning one is not ideal. The whole reason why im ready to sell my rx8 is because of the unpredictable but still bad no matter what mpg.

id also like my next car to have a turbo, and no be a scion.

Really? My friend's gf have Rx8 (for summer) and she told me it gets continuous same mpg.

Is it an automatic? I would assume you could get the same MPG all the time if you drive the same way. With a manual transmission, it would be tempting to rev it up to 8K once in while which would ruin your MPG.

Ryuu0u 03-23-2011 06:39 PM

Plan B for me is to get my hands on a 95-98 Celica GT4 and probably baby it, other than that maybe a new or used STI.

ah... you have a good point. Her Rx8 is AT

enc0re 03-23-2011 07:06 PM

I'm also strangely attracted to the CR-Z. But I'd only do it with a non-hybrid drivetrain. Even if it were the 1.8l SOHC out of the Civic.

Archer256 03-23-2011 07:17 PM

It needs to be fun to drive and have the right amount of power. The interior better be frikkin nice too i demand nav, leather, and a sound system like honestly the 370z has a nice interior it should be comparable even though it's for a lesser price range.

am i asking for too much?

if fail ill stick with my TSX till im done with my undergrad and trade it in for a new IS 350 or Boxster or whatever as was my original plan.

xantonin 03-23-2011 07:19 PM

I wouldn't buy another car. I'd enjoy having more money since I am paying off my current car.

It fails for me if it's no better than my current car.

OldSkoolToys 03-23-2011 07:44 PM

le-derp?

Zaku 03-23-2011 07:45 PM

Or I would just save up for the next ill iteration of the Cayman. Porsche are sex :D

Can never go wrong with old skool, especially with how newer cars are becoming more computer than machine.

If the FT-86 is a dud, then I'll be joining Wings on his ash pissing escapade.:bellyroll:

And then take the money I would've used for the FT-86, buy a AE86 coupe, and Levin-fy it....

Err, or finish my Hatch....damnit! Too many things to do.

Or get a Mk2 Supra and slap a 1JZ in there....

Or scourer the ends of the states for a clean ST165 All-trac....

See!? You can never go wrong with old skool!

4agze 03-23-2011 08:07 PM

If this failed (hope not) go to original plan a used lotus Exige S, Im not in a hurry I got my AE86 to keep my FR fun side occupied. I am willing to pay $40K+ on a great sports car like a BMW 1M my wife is pushing me to just get that vs the FT86.
