Calling all 2016 Owners! Next-Generation Fuel Pump: Crickets?

1 Attachment(s)
One of the most interesting tidbits in the leaked 2017 Model Year Changes Document was a revised fuel pump. The document states "R/C planned for 2016 MY" which would suggest that this was a Rolling Change that made it into some of the later 2016 vehicles.

Those of you with 2016 vehicles, particularly with later build dates, should check under the hood to see if you have the revised pump. I've attached an image which shows the difference between the pumps. Should be easy to tell just based on the design of the top cover (the old pump has a "flowery" shape whereas the new pump is just a flat surface.)

A lot of us here would be curious to hear from anyone with the new pump - specifically whether or not you are experiencing the same "cricket" noise that the rest of us have to deal with. It would be nice to know if the revised design minimizes that noise.

That's a fact, the crickets are annoying...especially when you pull up to a gas pump or in a drive thru.

I think my 16 limited was built last year. I will check, though.

Will be interested to hear for sure. Next question would be as to whether or not they'd replace my MY14 HPFP with the new model, should I go in and complain about crickets as a warranty issue. I've still got about 10000 miles left (unless this would be considered powertrain, then I have plenty o' miles).

I wonder if we complain loud enough (Pun intended) about the crickets if they will swap out older fuel pumps with the newer design....assuming it's quieter.

Mine was built in February 2016, I will check under the hold later today.

This is why I'm curious. Many people have gotten theirs swapped, but it's pointless to swap for the same pump. If this new pump fixes the crickets, I will be interested in seeing if I can have mine swapped for a newer model since I am well within the warranty period.

Around what mileage did y'all's pumps start chirping? My 16 has the old fuel pump but it doesn't chirp. Got around 6k miles on it so far. Built in March 2016.

It is considered power train. I had mine replaced at 50,000+ miles.

Mine started around 15,000 miles and has been chirping on and off since, mostly in warmer months.

Good to know and makes sense - thanks!

My 2015 series blue got the crickets at around 4000 miles.. Now at 21k, i still hear the crickets everyday, i already got use to it. As soon as its confirmed that the new fuel pump fixes the problem im going to subaru to get mine replaced.

Summerwolf 06-29-2016 01:48 PM

Pretty much started around 6K for me. I just clocked 25,000 miles. I have hunted out ethanol free stations and no change. I fill up only with 93 or 91.... no change. I have tried 100+ octane on a whim just trying to get rid of them or quiet them...no change.

OK, guess I'll live with it.

Some start early.
Some start late.
Some never get 'em.
Some never abate.

If you get crickets.
There's no need to fear.
If you don't wanna to hear them.
Just stand in the rear.

I hear them at drive throughs
Or at the gas pumps.
Exhaust is much louder.
And the rattles from bumps.
