Old Homelink System-Shame on Subaru
 

I had my homelink programmed and working for my garage door. Then the 10-year-old Liftmaster door opener failed.

Got a new Liftmaster opener (model 8550) on 7/3 and could not get the homelink programmed.

Called Homelink and they said that Subaru was using an "old" homelink setup which operated on the wrong frequency for a new Liftmaster opener.

Homelink says I need to buy some additional hardware (repeater, what ever that is).

The bad news is that I have to wait to get the repeater from Homelink in order to program Homelink.

The good news is that the part only costs $7.00.

The Homelink person was aware of the problem because several other Subaru owners with Liftmaster openers had the problem before me.

Truth is, vast majority of garage door openers in the country are greater than 5 years old. So this is a pretty low impact issue.

A low-impact issue until the "vast majority" needs to replace their openers.

And you forecast that occurrence to take place when?

Do share progress with the installation of the repeater.

Working in software, I can understand your frustration. It's like if Apple came out with a new iPad, and it's only compatible with 802.11b, not g or n. It's just wrong to come out with new hardware that isn't compatible with the latest standards. Then again, if Homelink made some radical breaking API changes, it's their fault for not getting everyone on board with how to use it.

The good news is that if Subaru comes out with a unit that works with the new homelink systems, it's just a mirror swap and nothing else :).

What's probably going on here is that Homelink is trying to create a niche market of old garage doors. It'll be damn near impossible to get an unmodified one, and Homelink will be the only ones supplying OEM parts for it. Think of the cult following for the AE86, now multiply that by 2. Imagine all the people gathering on weekends to show off their modified 15 year old garage doors. Lowered, turbo charged, different lighting, lighter chain, removing the safety sensor in order to save weight, carbon fiber, different gearing, motor swapping, etc. My friends, we're experiencing the birth of garage door tuning!

Speaking of which, can anyone photoshop me a mid-90s beige 2-car garage door with spinners, super narrow weather stripping, and a carbon fiber front diffuser?

Programming was a bit difficult as I had to keep pressing the button for the final programming until my garage door opened (a lot more than 3x). But all is well. My Lift Master is at least 8 years old.

My opener isn't even rolling code! That said, programming only took 1 second.

Google results indicate the average opener lasts 10 years.

I have a brand new Chamberlin installed. Homelink on my my Odyssey works fine with it. Can't for the life of me get it working on the Subaru BRZ.

Any tips?

weird have never had any problems with my Homelink working with my Sears Craftman garage door opener. Worked with Subby and the Nissan.

Call Homelink and get the "Homelink Repeater Kit". The phone # is on your Homelink Programming Instruction Sheet.

Tell them it's for the 2013 BRZ and it costs $7.00 including shipping.

It's a two minute job to get Homelink in your car programmed to your BRZ with this kit.

The kit is needed with all New Chamberlain, Sears Craftsman and Liftmaster garage door openers.
