Got a rather large crack in my windshield. Repairable or nah?
 

So I called my insurance to have it repaired and the guy said it was not reparable because of the nature of the crack. You can see the impact point of the rock, but then for some reason it made this crescent looking mark as well. The repair guy said the crescent was unrepairable and I would eventually have to replace my entire windshield. Anyone know if he's just trying to get business or not? Seemed like a nice enough guy, but you can never tell.

The short answer is no
The glue repair is designed to fix bull's-eye types of cracks. The star in your crack will extend with heating and cooling. If money or insurance is a problem and the spot is not in your view line, the glue fill will make it less noticeable until the star lines move out through the windshield.

Either wait till it spreads enough for you to replace the windshield, if it doesn't just roll with it.

Just leave it and tell your buddies it is a bullet hole. Can look like a badass until it cracks.

If it's bigger than a dime it's usually toast and with the cracks, it's toast now. Since you're in Houston and it doesn't get really cold there, it may take a while for it to spread. If you have a lot of crummy roads that are all bumpy and such, it will spread just from the flex of the body and glass,just not as fast as cars that have winter climate.

Some insurance companies offer one free windscreen a year, worth a check with yours..

You should check with your local glass companies and see what kind of glass they can replace it with. Some supply the Safelite brand while others might supply a new OEM glass.

It's only about $120 for non oem windshield in small shops. Call around. OEM windshield costs about $250 approx.

For what it's worth, in case any of you get a crescent crack like mine it hasn't spread at all while there is a straight line that is about 6 inches long from the star.

Packofcrows: is the non-oem worth it? There was another thread here debating which windshield brand to get and they were iffy on non-oem.

I would go OEM if at all possible. I got the windshield on my other car (07 Scion TC) replaced with whatever the glass company used and the clarity is noticeably worse than OEM. I hate driving the car now and having to look out that windshield.
