ATF Change on 13 FR-S
 

So I went to my mechanic and asked for a ATF and differential fluid change (Redline D6 ATF and Redline GL-5 Gear Oil, I brought my own). Since he told me that it was going to take more than 2 hours, I left to go run some errands. I came back, paid him, and went on my way. Gear changes were smooth so I thought he used the 2 gallons, didn't go for a full flush since I'm on a budget. When I came home, he called me to say that he had a gallon of ATF leftover. I asked him why he didn't use all 2, and he said that it was a Toyota transmission and it didn't take 2 gallons. Was he correct or should I demand that he use the other gallon?

In my honda it only takes 3 quarts at a time if you just drain and fill. And you have to drive it around a bit after each drain and fill to circulate the new fluid.

If you want him to use the rest you can but expect to pay again for labor. On Honda it was easy as an oil change to do myself, not sure on this car since I got an MT

I believe that the AT on a FR-S/BRZ takes about 8 quarts of ATF to fill it up (from empty).

So, either he didn't drain all of the old ATF out and it took only 4 qts to fill it up OR he drained it all out and only filled it half full ....... :iono:

Did he do the correct procedure? He should essentially only have half a gallon left here's why, for our ATs the procedure calls for this according to the service manual:
3 drain/overfills @ 2.1Quarts. So you'll need 6-6.3 US Quarts.

drain/overfill, engine on, Park to M & back
drain/overfill, engine on, Park to M & back
drain/overfill, bring oil to "proper" (42deg C) temp, & drain through overflow until it's thin as a thread.


That's it, the entire procedure will essentially "flush" everything including the torque converter, don't settle for anything else otherwise it a sub par job. Also remember don't let anyone use one of those crappy flushing machines AZP performance has seen cars that have had bent torque converter fins because of that. The above procedure should be the only thing done.

Like I mentioned I wasn't there to see what he did. I saw that he opened the unused gallon of ATF but never used it. So I have a gallon of opened ATF sitting in my garage. That being said, I don't think that he followed the procedure that you listed. I'm pretty sure that he just drained and filled until it overflowed, then stopped.

Then you need to ask him to do the procedure again, these TX6A/A960E transmissions get ruined when fluid levels aren't perfect. Also it really helps clean out the torque converter, in fact that's what the process is designed to do.
