I know that the files on the SD are licensed specifically to your vin number. The SD card is nothing special, its the same one you could go buy at wal mart. They license the files on the SD to a specific vin number to keep people from pirating the the map updates. That way one person can't buy a map update from the dealer, then share the file with friends to update other cars.
You probably need to go to a dealer to get a new SD card with the appropriate maps loaded. Its probably going to be a few hundred dollars(i would think its a similar price to getting the updated nav maps). Depending on how the priceing falls, it may be a good time to upgrade that head unit. I know i wouldn't want to dump a few hundred dollars into the stock head unit when a much better aftermarket solution is available for only a little bit more.
