Ecutek older roms
Wondering if anyone has some older manual OEM C roms for an ecutek I could try out. I recently got an ecutek, and when flashing any of the supplied oem roms, the car will not run correctly. Will not idle, just dies without holding the accelerator, accelerates very poorly, pops a too rich CEL, and MAP CEL. The car had a previous ecutek license, and tune on it (unbeknownst to me when purchased); not sure, since I'm new to the ecu tuning area, but wondering if that may have a bearing on the problems.
I've tried 3 of the newer OEM C roms with both racerom, and no racerom, and have the same issue with all of them. When I use the 2016 OEM ROM supplied, it always goes into limp mode at every start up. It's an early 2013 car with 14k miles. I ordered a stage 1 tune from FT86 Speed Factory, just waiting on the email with the tune; but would like the car to run normally in the mean time. Hoping an older OEM ROM will fix the issue, or hoping to get advice on flashing a ROM that will work. Thanks for any help/advice! |

The newer compatible roms are the best ones to run. If your 700/900/A00/A01/B00 in usa/Canada just run the B01 rom for C/D series cars. Their are no tuning changes in those updates it was all bug fixes for cams and idle. Don't run the newer roms like D00 or F00 they are not compatable and this is why ecutek would have thrown up a warning message. don't force ecutek to use roms it does not want to, you only do this if your swapping in another ecu from another car. The newer roms will not work in your car due dash and I think alternator changes. Their are no tuning changes in newer roms (other than extremely minor afr/timing changes for economy) If your car has an aftermarket intake its likely the cause. some old roms attached to TACTRIX post below but I don't think they will help you. |

I just flashed B01 with the same results. Tried the stock flash, then with race rom, then with race rom, and 3 bar omni map sensor settings. I increased the MAF max airflow limit, tried 200 (stock in the rom I have) 230, 250, and 270; with all these settings, the car runs so rich it dies at under 1k rpm every time, and the gas smell is really strong. I'm going to try one of the ones you attached to see what happens.
Sorry, forgot. No actual intake. Have a K&N drop in, and Perrin intlet tube. Just realized the ones you are attached are in .hex; assuming that's for tactrix |
If you are having those issues none of the older ROMs will help unfortunately. The reason EcuTek stopped including older ROMs is because there's no reason to. There's no reason to use B00C or A01C over B01C. D00C and newer are included because the older ones are incompatible.
For a USDM 6MT ZA1JB01C-enc.bin is the one you want to use. It's likely you have other unknown hardware changes or a mechanical issue if your car is refusing to run with that map. Pop the cover off the top of the manifold and see if there's any labels on the MAP sensor. It should prevent you from starting the car at all if it's an aftermarket one and it's not set even close but if it does fire up it should switch to MAF metering. Since you say it runs rich, check if you can spot the port injectors. Our OEM's are light gray colored. If yours are not, they've been changed and would definitely make the stock tune not run (and would definitely be very rich). Might be tough to spot if the original steel injector covers are still installed. It sounds like this car was modded before it was sold to you. |
It was definitely modded by the previous owner. What it had done, I have no idea.
I'm using an Omni 3 bar map sensor with the settings I got from the forum: Omni 3 Bar MAP Sensor (Metric in Bar) 0.617 - MULTIPLIER 0.03 - OFFSET scaling limits 0 - 4.75v I've used the stock MAP sensor with the basic ROM with the same results. I'll look at the port injectors to see what I notice. Are there any aftermarket/larger MAF sensors that may be causing an issue? It's hard to discern, since I don't have a stock BRZ to compare to. |

Larger MAF sensors I have not heard of, most tuners switch to speed density should the need arise. The OEM MAF sensor has the Subaru logo on it, part number 22680AA400. If you're not sure if a part has been changed feel free to post pics. Myself and others have definitely been around the engine bay enough to spot things out of place ;)
If you checked and there was an Omni 3-bar map sensor, the previous owner boosted it and there's a good chance the injectors were changed if it's running this poorly right now. If there's no label on the MAP sensor use the original scaling. Quote:

Come to think of it. When I first got the car home, I went through the engine bay looking for what was done. It had a lambda gauge in the car, and had a splitter on the master cylinder vacuum line, as if there were a boost gauge. So if it was boosted, or was planning for boost, maybe those injectors are larger, and it was tuned to a proper mixture after the boost didn't happen. Though again, I'm new to the tuning side, so it's all just speculation from my side.

I posted pics of the injectors on mine, so I'll leave it to your capable eyes to tell me what I'm not sure of :) thanks for your time with this. |
Originally edited my previous post but since you only quoted the original I'm assuming you didn't see it :p
Those are 100% not OEM injectors. I'm assuming there wasn't a metal cover over them either (though a lot of people leave them out after swapping). Unfortunately it means you'll likely have to remove them to figure out what size they are unless you can spot a brand or other numbers that are printed on the injector. The adapter pigtails are common with most aftermarket injectors. |
Makes a lot of sense now. I started searching for stock injectors, and saw immediately the difference. I'll see what I can find with them.
The car was made ready for resale by the dealer who picked it up from the previous owner. Everything looked stock (the shields were on, I removed them) except for a shitty catch can, and coilovers when I got it. Though I'm finding quite a bit has been done. I'm slowly making my way through, fixing/replacing/upgrading things. The previous owner did a lot of really cheap crap to the car. I'm assuming the injectors are possibly ebay specials, as nothing else done to the car was with care, or concern. |

Since your now talking 3 bar map sensors and non standard injectors I gather the car is turbo or SC ? or was Yes non standard injectors and or non standard MAP sensor will cause issues on stock roms. You seem to have map sensor sorted but your going to need to find out what injectors your running and change the tune to adjust the port injector scalar and likely injector latency ect to suit the injectors. These cars start on 100% port injection so it likely the aftermarket injectors are bigger and causing it to run super rich, which is not good. It possible the original owner had a turbo/sc pulled it off and then left the bigger port injectors in and kludged the tune to suit them. This also means you tune you ordered from ft86speed factory wont work, unless they know about the injectors or you swap in some stock port injectors and map sensor. |
So from what I can see in the picture, they are Bosch EV14 injectors with USCAR connectors. They look like they match the OEM length injector though I can't really tell; you'd be able to see better by whether or not the injector rail bolts directly to the manifold or if there's a spacer.
For aftermarket injectors that are available for the BRZ, here's what I know: If they are OEM length they are not Injector Dynamics (they all typically require injector spacers except the ID850 and ID2000, but neither of those have the connector type you have). Deatschwerks doesn't mark theirs in a distinguishable way from regular EV14's from what I can tell. Fuel injector clinic usually prints a blue logo band around the base of the injector. I don't know much about other brands. They do look like they could be eBay specials. If you pull the injectors and the original Bosch part number is on there you can find the size and tune for them (if they're smaller injectors, larger ones are better off balanced). Though you may save heartache and hassles by just getting another set that you know more about. If you don't have plans to boost, I'm sure someone would sell you stock injectors too. Heck mine are in a box somewhere in the basement probably, if I haven't tossed them. |
