That must be the "J-factor" :bellyroll:

Cool vid, but all we learned is that, in theory, all the spoilers are functional rather than just for show.

I'll buy that for now :iono:

I would expect most of the vents/spoilers to be functional rather than for show as they said the "aerodynamics developed from F1 technology".

What is "KEEN LOOK FACE" and J-DESIGN FACTOR

NESW20 03-17-2011 05:33 PM

hmm, i guess no one else cares about potential functional brake cooling ducts??? :iono:

or CAI

doubtful that they would put that style vent/duct for an air intake. usually they'll just put some generic ducting behind the grill where it isn't visible. also, subaru air intakes are on the the other side of the car. ;) we should really look to see if there's another vent on the other side. if it's present on both sides, it's almost certainly brake cooling ducting.

I'm just saying for after market option. Cuz if you're talking bout vents below the headlights, isn't that lil bit up there?

NESW20 03-17-2011 08:19 PM

proof of vents on both sides:

now, it's hard to tell how open they really are, but usually when i see brake ducts, they're very low, so the duct needs to come up from the inlet. i fail to see any difference in bringing the duct down from the inlet to meet the rotor. :iono:

Either way you look at it so far it has more air flow then any mustang that I've seen in real life.

NESW20 03-17-2011 11:56 PM

ha, yeah. to be fair, the new Boss 302 seems to be serious business.

now one reason i really think they're more functional than not is that they're not a huge styling cue. like, if toyota wanted to advertise that there are vents there, they would have made a bigger deal out of them, made them easier to see. this way, it almost seems like a functional afterthough, sort of like this:

"oh !@#$, we're gonna need to cool the brakes. we need brake ducts, where can we put openings in the front fascia without being too obtrusive?"

He does say that parts of the redesign were based on driver feedback. Must've got a bit of fade on the track. Could be the fender vent is legit too, for cooling. I'm appreciating some of the re-design a bit more in that context. (production flat bottom would be sooooo awesome...)

Aki 03-23-2011 05:08 PM

Hoping the production version will be in between the first and second concept as far as boldness goes.

Fender vent could be for reducing air turbulence from front wheels, but doubt it. And even if it were functional, I'd still prefer having no vent at all. Looks like a tacky imitation of the E92 M3 vent.

Funny somebody mentioned Dave Marek (responsible for all the hideous Acura designs), the guy definitely isn't stylin'.

All those vents look functional to me, attempted to see it visually.

Aki 03-23-2011 09:45 PM

If reducing turbulence from the wheels is the goal, then it's best to have the venting behind the wheel, instead of being that high up. Suppose it could be to vent the engine, but doesn't seem like a great place to put it. Considering vents often aren't functional even on like a BMW M, inclined to say it's completely aesthetic.

Dimman 03-23-2011 10:49 PM

Hood is best spot to vent engine compartment, cut them right where the low pressure zones form, and seal the bottom. Heat management AND lift reduction. :)

What do you guys think this is, an Italia? :D

Ok goodnight. You will have to wait a bit longer for that info unfortunately.

RRnold 04-11-2011 10:03 PM

I bet those front and side vents will be nothing but cosmetic just like the Tacoma Sport/X-Runner hood scoop.
