Warning for California Tuners' with loud exhaust

I want to share my recent experience regarding my CHP exhaust ticket so California tuners' will know what to expect. I was pulled over by the CHP and got a ticket for my Tomei 80mm exhaust with no cat on my way to the track. I thought it was just another fix it ticket like similar tickets I have gotten in the past; where you put stock exhaust back on and go to your local CHP and get it written off. I was wrong. I put my stock exhaust back on and went to my local CHP office in Rancho Cucamonga and the officer wouldn't sign it off and said it needed to go to BAR. I thought it might have been a fluke and I went to a different station. I put my stock front pipe on for added assurance and brought it to Walnut Sheriff station hoping they would sign it off, nope they said they won't touch it and it has to go to CHP. So I brought it Baldwin Park CHP and they said the same thing it had to go to BAR. So I called to make an appointment for a exhaust noise test and the representative over the phone said they will only test exhaust noise and will not check under the hood. The test was to be done at Rio Honda referee station. I put stock everything from the header back. The test cost $108 pass or fail. I go there and the referee check under my car with a mirror. After the referee ask to look under the hood that's when I started getting anxious because left the supercharger and other misc. on. Referee ask about the supercharger and I Google the carb number and showed it to him. Afterward he check the carb number and check my supercharger to make sure it corresponded the right part. He was satisfied with it and began the test. He place the db microphone 3 feet away from exhaust and rev it to 5k. My stock exhaust setup measured 87db. A sticker was place in the back of my ticket and I went back to Baldwin Park CHP and the officer sign it off.

The main take away with this entire experience is be careful with the exhaust you choose and hopefully not get pulled over by CHP. I heard other agencies are not as difficult. I hope my testimony will help others. :burnrubber:

Cool story bro. lol

Did you leave your car on while the cop was writing you the ticket?
Just how ricey looking is your car? Maybe you been checked too many times for exhaust

& this is why i reinstalled my stock front pipe... Too loud is just too loud sometimes

Lol happened to me too..
Long time ago
Luckily the bar ref didn't have the specs for the 86 so signed off saying no specs and got court dismissed on it..

Every since then.. Been seeking a quieter catless setup, Perrin 2.5 seems to do the job.. But regardless you'll need a hi flow cat for quiet..

My car was off after I got pulled over. My sig has a link for build thread. My frs has so far one exhaust ticket. This story just telling you the hassle you have to go through to get your ticket sign off with chp.

I do agree the header and full exhaust setup was the biggest reason for getting pulled over. The supeecharger really didn't make a difference with noise till you get on the car. I changed to evasive exhaust after and it had made it very streetable.

What was the citation number? Was it marked as correctable?

CHP is a different story than getting a fix it ticket from a regular officer, essentially it just entails having to go to a state ref to have the car checked over and to make sure ALL the emission components are installed or they could just tow your car away it depends on the situation. Just make sure you keep all OEM parts when and if the time comes.

sorry to hear you had to go thru all that. that sucks.

some officers are just assholes that are bored, but most are actually pretty cool.

How do you guys mod cars in CA? Sounds like a hassle to go through that process everytime you are pulled over and issued a ticket.

Don't drive like an asshat and choose a quieter exhaust setup. Sometimes you can't avoid it because the officer is in a bad mood and looking for something to do.

Well, it was 100% his fault. That exhaust set up sounds loud and obnoxious. Hard to have sympathy when you knowing go for a loud set up and continue to drive with it.
