Help prevent boost creep

After installing a 3 inch catback my car has been boost creeping quite a bit and I can't solve the issue. Currently i am running the HKS hi power single exit and catless everything else. What if i was to add a catted front pipe could that help reduce the boost creep so i'll have some restriction? OR should i just stop bitching and port the turbo?

What do you use to control boost? Manual boost controller? EBCS? Is your turbo internal WG or external?

Your options are improve your wastegate's ability to do it's job, add another wastegate, or restrict the exhaust. The PTUNING kit on my S2000 actually uses what they call a boost regulating disc that just slides between my downpipe and test pipe in the V band connector.

I am unfortunately invested into the SBD kit. Which for what I am into it now(replacing all most of the garbage parts that came with it) I could have bought a much higher quality kit.

The car performs well but this boost creep is getting on my nerves. I have an internal wastegate, I purchased a manual boost controller just to install inline and leave it closed I thought maybe that would help regulate boost. It's not installed yet I am waiting to get the car back from the body shop still.

I was able to adjust the wastegate to only hit 10psi(what it is supposed to do), but there was like NO Preload on the wastegate at all and it took forever to build boost..

Everyone at Speed by design says you need to port the turbo, you need to port the turbo..Well then why sell me this shit if it doesn't come ready to go..Or if you guys know its a problem...fix it for the rest of the people..They did send me a new wastegate. I haven't gotten a chance to install it. Because No matter how i adjust the wastegate it kind of just does whatever it wants which made me think this wastegate is trash. but hey it only has about 4k miles on it. I really wanted to just go external but i have been trying to mock up where i can install one and I don't see many decent options with how the manifold/downpipe are positioned.

Looks like my best options are to restrict the exhaust, or port the turbo? Should I just do both? And Adding a cat would restrict it correct?I just want to enjoy my car this summer instead of trial and error all summer.

Throwing this out there. The Turbos are now Ported from the factory.

I am really surprised you couldn't get it to stay under 11psi with enough preload to keep the wastegate closed. As it seems a ton of people don't have any issue. I know I have no issue with an un-ported kit with a full 2.5" straight back.

What did you mean by "Wastegate does whatever it wants"

Also interested in what parts you have had to replace due to poor quality.

Edit: Did you install the MAP sensor that came with the kit?

As reported, Car was Perfect until I installed a 3 inch catback. Yes I have the map sensor installed, car is tuned and all that jazz(OFT, shiv). And as in no matter how I have adjusted the wastegate It was still going to 12, 15, 13, 18, whatever it wants. So that's when shiv said for me to get a new wastegate. I just got it. once the car gets back I will replace it. But my point being the wastegate should not be faulty with such short time of use..If it is/was faulty, how long will this one last..

Before the exhaust car would it 11.5 max which was fine with me but I now have the over boost protection built into the tune and when the car his over 13.5 it hits fuel cut? whatever it is. Which kinda makes it undriveable.

I have replaced all types of random things Blow off valve, Oil feed, Oil return, most of the hardware, all of the clamps, I feel like it was definitely more but that's not my point right now. I just wish all the time wasted on this kit I should have bought another kit and just installed it, dropped it off to get tuned and be done.. Just trying to hammer out my issue and be able to rip on the car again.

Dustin, Do you have a blanket or the shield?

I'm wondering if my blanket is interfering with the wastegate, because i installed that around same time as the exhaust..

Would that make any sense? I'm not 100 percent sure how it works. I would guess once it sees pressure it opens? What is supposed to happen when it closes?

No Blanket for me, But that was My next question. It can rub on the wastegate arm and cause it to stick closed. If you can. Try getting the new wastegate to hold at only 10psi without the blanket, then install it.

I'm probably going to reinstall the heatshield as my blanket that i bought from SBD looks like a dirty diaper now. Lol.

And the wastegate sticking closed. What would happen in that case? Overboost because it can't open right?

DustinS 04-26-2016 12:49 PM

I am running without anything currently. I plan on installing a PTP Blanket down the road.

Yeah it would give the exact symptoms you are experiencing. Makes sense with how wildly inaccurate your boost levels are as well.

I will report back once I try this out, just incase someone down the road is having this probem!

Shady195 08-21-2016 06:38 PM

Sorry to bump an old thread, just thought it was amusing someone else is having the same problem as me with the same setup and catback..

Car was hitting 11-11.5 at the most, installed the HKS Catback and it creeped up to 13-14

Getting myself a 7PSI wastegate and an MBC to dial it back in to 11

Can it be the flex pipe tubing on your header that's leaking? I only see SBD and Greddy using that crap for some reason.

Nope.

Put my old cat back on briefly to verify.

No issues with a 2.5 but as soon as I move back to a 3" i get boost creep.
