I'm in a similar boat but with 1-2. Haven't had it happen inner normal acceleration in a long time but at higher RPMs it will do it once in a while. At first I thought I just fucked up my shift but I'm positive it's not me now

You can definitely try a different fluid. I have a similar crunch (doesn't grind yet, just is uncomfortable) going from 6th to 5th at anything about 75 MPH. I'm on Neo 75w-90. I kind of wanted to try Valvoline 75w-90 next, I had good luck with that in my MR2 Turbo for higher RPM "crunches".

If you do purchase another transmission, I'd be willing to go through your trans for a very reasonable price to try and learn what is going wrong with 5th gear synchro. I plan to do this to my trans when I install our stronger straight cut gearset.

Ensure you're using quality fluid and that the shift gate to reverse isn't causing a slight misalignment.

Thanks,
Eric

I've been using Amsoil. How do I check the reverse gate?

Maybe, maybe not. It's hard to say without knowing anything else. But I have been running it on a stock clutch and it has been nothing short of amazing in feel. I have a lot of other transmission work as well, but I can definitely tell the difference with this fork in the pedal feel.

What else do you have done?

I ran Motul for about a week before I dumped it. I'm guessing that fluid is great in a hot climate, but up here, even in near summer it was atrocious. Now I'm on a mixture of two Redline fluids (MT85 & 90) and it's working flawlessly.

We went with the mixture after looking at the specs for the factory specs, and the Motul stuff. We were aiming for a low temp viscosity that was just a little less than factory, to help with the cold weather operation. I haven't had any troubles with shifting in anything from 5 degrees to 40.

Yeah I wanted to open it up when I build the trans! It's annoying that this car as so many problems after boost. Might need those gears sooner! haha

Good to know! Yeah I might try another fluid this week and see how it goes. Hopefully it helps because I like my 5th gear on the freeway!

It's expected in my opinion. We're doubling the power these cars have from the factory, and tripling even.

Well, I'm located in Phoenix. Orange County isn't terribly far, we could tear it apart together in a day easily. PM me if interested. I has beer  .

Thanks,
Eric

if youre going 80 and go down to 4th. You run out of revs quick after boosting a bit..

Should you be passing someone if you are already going 80?

Just don't blame me if it doesn't help. :) I agree with the others, that a clunky 5th isn't a likely indication of fluid being the problem. That said, a different fluid might be able to mask the problem, and extend the life of the wearing part.

Anyone use syncromesh before? Friend said to try it out. I remember that I'm using amsoil right now, and never really had a problem with motul before.

I'm still a big fan of Honda green label MTF. It was designed for transmissions like ours that contain yellow metals. I used it exclusively in my old 400hp Hondas, and it's the OEM spec'd fluid for the S2000. It's not too expensive, I'd just change it with every other oil change and it kept the tranny shifting super smooth.

I have an issue with both fourth and fifth grinding as well. My engine is stock. I too changed the fluid to Amsoil. I will ask the dealer about it under the manufacture warranty when they swap my side glass. I had minor issues from the beginning. One of the reasons why I haven't boosted yet is trying to figure out what to do with the gearbox first.
