Thinking about moving to Dallas (area), but concerned about floods/hail

How often does it flood and rain down hail capable of damage? What areas of Dallas and surrounding suburbs are prone to flooding? Areas I'd likely be living/working would be Plano, Richardson, Carrollton, and the City.

That would be Houston according to the news.

It doesn't happen? Are these links referring to places outside of the city? Or areas that are considered outskirts of Dallas?

Most of the severe weather is quite localized and unlikely to actually effect an individual. North Texas is quite low on the natural disaster risk scale:

Flooding is rare and localized (also short lived). The key is to not live next to a river, lake, or on a flood plain. I'd worry more about hail, but that's really just an annoyance and not really a hazard (especially if you have a garage).

While it can happen in some spots around town we don't get as severe flooding like Houston. But stay away from downtown Dallas when it does happen, there can be some surprise flooding on some streets. I came close to a situation last year near Love Field, I had no choice but to go through a couple flooded streets. It was close but any higher she probably would of been a goner. No joke though, but @CO777DAL Ultramarine FR-S floated away in the downtown area this week. He was in the car and had to swim out, thankfully he is ok but the car is done for.

The Plano / Frisco area is a good place to live.

North Carrollton is also a reasonable place.

I live in Carrollton and have worked in Richardson and Lewisville and I've only seen water across the road near 35E by the Frankford dart station.

Seems like every year it floods. I don't live there but I see the news. Pick a place on a hill and if it looks likely to flood, don't go to work

Has always seemed to me the severe north Texas weather usually stays west and southwest of Dallas itself.

the outer counties (near man made lakes) tend to flood more. that viedo above is an enormously wide watershed for the trinity with army core built levees.

hail is a yearly occurrence.

Texas only makes weather news once a year, during our Spring months where the temperature fluctuates a lot. Most areas don't flood as bad as you'd think, definitely no where near as bad as Houston. Hail, another less than 5 times a year occurrence.

It really varies by where you live. For example I'm 40 minutes south of Dallas and didn't get a single hail stone this past storm. Just make sure you have a garage or covered parking, and your hail threat is near eliminated.

Yes, make sure to get a garage when you move here. Thankfully, I've not had a car destroyed by hail yet -- but I have several of my friends who have. One day while wrapping up a project at work, the heavens opened up and demolished most of the cars in the parking lot. Thankfully, my RX-8/R3 was under one of the few covered parking spots.

If you don't get surprised by the weather, and have a parking garage you will be fine. I know some guys who will leave work early if there's even a hint of hail in the forecast (and don't have a parking garage at work). Better safe than sorry when you have a vehicle you cherish.
