Exhaust note nearly perfect... But can you help me bring down the volume?

Evening all,

Just installed Greddy SP Elite Axleback 2 days ago and I'm a bit surprised. I was under the impression that the Greddy provided 'just a tick more grunt than stock', even when paired with a UEL.

...This is not the case however. In my opinion it is quite loud in the cabin. I'm running Gruppe-S UEL, stock FP, stock OP, Greddy SP Elite. During acceleration it is challenging to have a conversation. With that being said, I can cruise at very low volume, and there is little drone.

Had a buddy drive the car to show off today:

I think the tone is great, but i'd like to lower the volume a tad. I'm under the impression that this won't be easy to do, as the Greddy seems to be nearly as 'quiet' as the q300 in popular opinion. Is there another way that I could lower the volume of the Greddy (perhaps by adding a resonator?). I'd like to retain the UEL header for the torque benefits.

Thoughts?

The topspeed pro-1 is a Greddy elite SP clone, the greddy sp elite isn't actually being built any more . In fact my build involves installing a topspeed pro 1 eventually and yours sounds quite good. You're car is about as quiet as can be with just an axleback and uel, I can only think of getting a HKS dual resonated front pipe but then you'll be fully catless and that may be a problem with emissions for you.

Basically you have created a problem that OEM engineers spent months getting rid of: excessive drone at certain RPMs/frequencies inside the cabin.

You can start by figuring out whose midpipe you want to cut up, your own or a used one from someone else. And then you'll have to play around with resonator size.

Good luck.

Change front pipe with high flow cat with resonator

I have the same exhaust setup (catless uel and sp elite) and it isn't loud in the car if I don't accelerate hard. I can barely hear if I don't step on it and it's not an issue with a reasonable amount of gas. Try slowing down the acceleration for normal driving or switch to a catted header if it's that loud for you.

Give it some time. I had this same issue too with I installed the Perrin 2.5 resonated w/ Gruppe-S UEL. After a week or two it quieted down substantially.

Yes indeed -- I'm glad you caught that from the description I put on the video. I was trying to weed out those who would come into the thread and see that i've purchased the 'off' brand of the Greddy SP. I'm not a cheap fellow, but saw a good opportunity and was able to inspect the welds myself.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to introduce any more volume. This car is quite interesting, because it can be as quiet or as loud as desired via throttle pedal (and compression ratio).... but its harder for me enjoy the high RPM without waking everyone up from their afternoon nap.

Fair enough. Might be something I take a crack at in spare time with a used midpipe. It makes sense that everything is a compromise with power/tone/loudness. Appreciated!

Doesn't the stock front pipe have a resonator and secondary cat in it as is? I've considered adding a second cat somewhere down the chain, but if I do that i'm afraid that i'll lose my torque benefits of the catless UEL.

I've been wondering this as well -- I swore the volume was more manageable today than last saturday. Can't tell if i'm just adjusting to the volume, or if there really is a break-in period that quiets things down.

If so, that may just be what I need! That would be awesome.

I've also heard however, that the Greddy/TopSpeed get louder after xxx miles.

Hard to know how much of this is placebo vs reality.

Lower the volume? Add an additional muffler.

Cancel drone? Add a resonator.

Teseo 04-19-2016 12:59 AM

Or you can ask at your local muffler shop to install another resonator in the front pipe
