Same price Automatic and Manual
 

Hi! Good day!

Since I finally decided to get a Red Manual BRZ, the manager told me I can get the Automatic for the same price as the Manual one.

Hmmmm, I liked the Manual, but should I take advantage to take the Automatic for the price of a Manual 2016 BRZ Limited?

I never driven a Automatic with paddle shifters before, and I cant test drive a Automatic BRZ since they don't have one and this will be ordered straight from Japan.

Please respect my post, I need your opinions of the Automatic version since I never driven one before.

I'm very sorry for my Bad English, I'm in a rush now.

First choice is usually the right choice.

Been driving the AT now for 1.5 years and love it. Note the auto has longer gearing so has better fuel economy but is slower than the manual by about .5 of a second 0-60mph.

I fixed the gearing via a different final drive ratio upgrade so no biggie.

The paddles are pretty cool, I use them all the time while in sports mode. The computer will lock you out of down or upshifting if it thinks its a bad idea for the engine and will down shift if your RPM's drop too low.

If you double tap fast enough it will down (or up) shift two gears. I use gear breaking in sports mode all the time so unless I need to come to a stop I just down shift for traffic that slows ahead of me.

If you floor it in sports mode it will wind all the way out to redline, you will see the shift light come on and it will change up smoothly into second. Quite addictive on a stock car, more so when moded.

Leaving the car in regular drive will make you a very sad panda. Needless to say sports mode will adversely effect your fuel economy, but then petrol is cheap!

Keep in mind that the AT in these is not your "normal" off the shelf auto. They are specifically designed to work very well with the engine. There are not many guys that have them that have any complaints. Those that do want to switch to MT frequently show all the signs of giving into "these cars should be MT bro" peer pressure.


There must be one for sale someplace that you can take for a test drive. I would not just change my mind without driving both or you will always be second guessing you choice.

Get the manual. This car wants it to give you the full experience. The paddles are not a substitute for the real thing, regardless of what the marketing says.

The reason they're now discounting the auto is that they are less desirable in this car than usual. Day old bread. Scratch and dent. Homes in Flint, MI. Discounts happen for a reason.

Get the manual because you won't regret it.

Definitely drive both before you make a decision. I test drove an AT before I got my MT, and I honestly was impressed with the AT. I was expecting something similar to my XJ's transmission, but it was quite responsive and smooth, For me, I wanted a manual, because of preference, but I am glad I drove both.

A new car is never a trivial purchase, even if the auto makes sense financially that alone is not a reason to get it. You really need to test drive both and also consider the reality of where and when you will spend the bulk of your driving over the coming years.

No manual, No want.


That sounds like a horrible deal by even having a salesman mention automatic.... ugh.

There are obviously a lot of people who drive these cars who really enjoy driving a manual, but you really can't let that influence you. I test drove both versions of the car myself and was quite impressed by the responsiveness and smoothness of the auto.

I concur with what @Tcoat said, you really need to drive both versions before you can know for sure how you'd feel about the auto.

I wouldn't let the fact that he's giving you a "deal" on the auto influence the decision. Buy the transmission you prefer, it's what you'll be driving around with.

There's a reason that they're willing to see the auto at a manual price, lack of demand. Re-sale value is going to be less down the road as well.

I chose the automatic based on my current needs, and have no regrets.

You will want to evaluate your needs and test drive both if possible.

If test driving the automatic is not an available option, go with the manual because you have already driven it and confirmed you enjoyed it.

It depends what floats your boat. I love working the gears and would be bored to tears with an automatic. Others feel differently. You know you best. I hope.
