I try not to do it much, but I skip 4th
|
Which gear do you skip the most?
I never get to first when slowing down does that count? End at 2nd at a minimum then when just about to stop go into neutral from there.

I live on top of a big hill and like to let gravity do most of my acceleration instead of using the gas pedal so I can save gas. Is it bad if I accelerate to 15-20 mph in 1st or 2nd, then skip to 6th and let off the gas while gravity takes over? It takes forever to accelerate by gravity at lower gears due to engine braking.

The question "which gears to you routinely skip?" has a much different answer than "do you skip gears and, if so, why?" I don't really routinely shift in any specific manner, other than to make sure I'm in a gear appropriate to whatever I'm asking the car to do at the moment and make sure I rev-match when shifting to a more appropriate gear if the "mission" changes. During normal light acceleration from a stop up to highway speeds surrounded by other traffic, I go through all the gears. When I give the car it's reigns on the back road home and enjoy a nice launch beginning in second gear during/after the sharp turn onto the road, I'll stay in second all the way up to 6500 rpm or so. Engine's still pullin' hard, and I'm pretty close to 55 at that point (I don't recall the exact speed the upper limits of second gear produce, but it's around there), and I don't intend to go any faster or continue accelerating, so what's the point in shifting through 3, 4, and 5 all at the same m.p.h.? It's inefficient. I just shift right from 2nd to 6th. 2nd gear fits the desire to accelerate as quickly as possible up to 50 mph or so, and then 6th fits the desire to stay at that speed economically. ALWAY rev-match.. do NOT shift quickly from a high-reving 2nd (or any other high-reving gear) to a gear that would correspond to lower revolutions w/out allowing the revs to drop first.
I don't routinely "launch;" for me, routine driving is driving in light traffic so my driving habits are governed by fitting in with the cars around me. 95% of the time, that means light acceleration and deceleration. No reason to skip gears during acceleration in those circumstances, and skipping gears when coming to a stop.. well.. I don't know anyone who always downshifts through all the gears when coming to a gradual stop. Slowing down to accelerate through a fun turn.. that's a different story. I routinely select the right gear for the current or desired performance and routinely rev-match when I shift. That's about the only statement that makes any sense. Yes? Barry |
When I skip gears I still put it in the gear (with the clutch in) letting the orbitals sync up so when i get into that next gear its already at the speed of the drive shaft.

Money shifting count? :P

It's weird, I don't skip gears but this is what I do (not always, semi-rare), say I'm in fifth gear, and there's a red light ahead, instead of going to third and blipping the throtle to rev match, I'll go clutch in, blip throttle, go to 4th, (still in clutch), blip throttle again, go to third, and then let the clutch out. So it's like I still go through the gears but rev match doing so if I'm going to "skip" a gear. If I have time to let out the clutch from hitting 4th, then I'll just do that and afterwards, go clutch in and revmatch for third. Otherwise I'll do both as I describe above. I wonder if that way is at least healthier for the synchros than just skipping the gear altogether.

Before supercharger I went from 4th to 6th or 3rd to 5th. Once i got the extra power I found I was getting to speed limit ALOT quicker sometimes going from 3rd to 6th
|
I always skip N.
From P then I skip N then I put to D. |
I often find myself skipping 5th in slow moving traffic, but I'm making a conscious effort to use it due to my OCD.

6th. :bonk:

I generally only skip gears in the city, use low ones to get up to speed then cruise at a higher gear, so usually shift 1->4 or 2->5 skipping 3/4. While downshifting getting off the freeway I always skip 5th and go straight to 3rd or 4th.

I tend to "skip" first a lot. Living in Chicago with so many stop signs, it's easier to do everything from 2nd, lol.
Also 5th is like the bastard child for me. It's again a result of the average speed limits around here, but if I get up to that kind of speed, I generally go from 4th to 6th. |
