Look, we can bring skipping 4th gear back. That I will tell you, we're bringing it back okay? I understand what you're saying, and I get that from so many people. "Is it okay to skip gears?" They are asking me the question, "is it okay to skip gears?" And the transmission is in trouble. Okay? It's in trouble. But we're going to use every gear and do some real shifting too.

lmao.

No such thing as skipping gears. If you are going a certain speed at a certain RPM, there is a correct gear for that situation. C'mon now guys.

I would love to see you guys try to quickly stop the car from 100MPH and hit every gear on the way down then calmly go to neutral at the end.

I do 6th to 4th if I'm going from the highway to a fun offramp, and 4th to 6th if I'm going from a fun onramp to the highway.

I don't skip gears, I run through them like if they were running out of style

Skipping gears won't kill your transmission but it does increase wear on the syncros in certain circumstances. In particular, because 1st and 3rd and 2nd and 4th share syncros, you should avoid skipping those gears. Additional wear on the syncro happens on these shifts because the syncro it will still be spinning too fast for the next gear when you are trying to go into it. Obviously, this can be avoided by sitting in neutral long enough for the syncro to spin down before you try going into the next gear but that kind of defeats the purpose. If you try to go straight from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to 4th right away, you'll feel resistance as the syncro spins down until it's slow enough to pop into gear. As you feel that resistance, you are pushing against the spinning syncro causing additional wear.

Will it kill your transmission? Not right away but it should be avoided if you can help it. I will note that I'll sometimes skip 2nd when the car is very cold to avoid grinding but I wait plenty of time before pushing it into 3rd.

Skip from 1 to 6 all day all day.

Just kidding. I love going through my gears. I have skipped some gears in the past but I've tried not to because sometimes I hear a loud clunk when I don't use the clutch properly.

On downshifts, I think I ignore 4th a lot. It is usually 6 > 3 or 5 > 3.

On up-shifts, not enough torque. I feel like you must use every gear to keep acceleration linear. If I did a 4 to 6, I would feel like the engine just died. Going to 5th first prepares me for the disappointment of lugging around in 6th.

With my GTI I always skipped 5th because there was a 200-ish rmp difference between 5th and 6th. In the frs all the gears feel useful to me.

Yea i rarely skip gears with the occasional miss shift. Only time I would ever skip gears is when im feeling rev happy and suddenly see a cop, in which im 3rd =>6 lol
