Well, I do skip gears, but only down. It's not unusual for me to go from 6th to 4th on the AT (double tap to pass), or even the occasional 6th to 3rd..

depends traffic density & street mph limits. ill skip 3rd, 4th, and 5th but never all together. sometimes 1->2-->4 or 5 for city streets. sometimes 1->2-->3-->5 or 6 when merging interstate
|
Every now and then I skip 4th gear while driving on local roads. Ill just rev up a little higher in 3rd and then just throw it straight to 5th and cruise.
|
I skip second gear in the mornings and then continue to skip it from time to time. I also try to stay out of 5th.

That's oddly specific, why don't you skip 2nd in the afternoon or evening as well? :D |

I promised myself I would just sit back and keep my mouth shut on this subject. Apparently I lied to myself. Not the popular opinion but skipping gears can (not will, just can) harm your transmission. Not going to debate it any further since I know there will be 100s of "no it won't" from prior arguments. Oddly enough the biggest "no it won't" argument I ever had here was with a guy that was on his third transmission. Of course his statement was simply that they are "crap" quality. I will just continue to use all of my gears, all of the time and enjoy my 60k mile 100% problem free tranny and clutch. OK guys, have at me! |

Lol "crap quality". Anyways, I don't think skipping gears can harm your transmission if done correctly. The only thing you've gotta keep in mind is making sure the synchros match up fairly well. You don't wanna be too high or too low in the RPMs going from 2nd (at 60MHP) to 5th or 6th gear. It just depends on the driver I guess. As for the "can harm your transmission", just driving in general harms the vehicle. Doesn't it? :D |

Yep! Yep! Big yep! Oh and I was not saying that Sheep broke his transmission just pointing him out as an example of a guy that has issues and skips! |

(in my case) texas is mostly flat. if driving up a hill, skipping gears is certainly a bad idea. if on a 30 mph road, i dont see problem with 1-2-4. but its potato /potAto
