BRZ DRL Blackout
I've been looking everywhere for threads or photos of anyone's whose had the opportunity to crack open the DRLS on the BRZ.
One of the mods I plan to tackle this summer is to blackout the DRL & fog light on my BRZ so they are almost not even visible on the car - at least not at first. And obviously still %100 functional but purely an aesthetic thing. I did notice, looking at the DRL, that there's 3 LEDS inside there. My goal with this mod is to create kind of a faux rocket bunny look by blacking out the inside the of the housing, possibly upgrading the LEDS to something a little brighter/bluer, and blacking out the actual lens in order to hide the DRL unit in the bezel there. The same sort of treatment will be don't to the fog light housing. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this? It's been too cold to go out and take the DRL off to inspect it but just planning ahead. I guess the first thing that comes to mind is paint all chrome inside and VHT outside of the lens? Thoughts? Looking to go for this kind of look: http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d1c23f9399.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...0f9ad9180c.jpg All of your help is greatly appreciated. I'll be attempting this as well as documenting the whole thing within the next few weeks. Not too many threads on this so I think we need one. |
I replaced mine with rgb strips I soldered and wired to my rgb halos and footwells I already had. The DRLs and fog lights both screw into the bumper. Once you have them removed, make them like the headlights. They pull apart.

When you had it open, did it look like replacing the current leds with different ones was something possible? If I desoldered the OEM ones and soldered in new ones. |
Honestly my electrical/soldering skills aren't advanced enough for me to be comfy with that. It's your typical led setup on a board so if your comfortable enough desoldering and soldering new ones plus any heat sinks or other stuff on there then go for it. I just pulled the board and retrofitted the little holes in the cover before I blacked it out so everything looked very clean and lined up. My front end looks almost exactly like the pic you posted. But u chose to blackout the chrome parts of the lights, not the actual plastic covers

So would simply blacking out the chrome yield the results in the picture? Or would I need to tint the lens too? |
Blacking out the chrome would make it match the blacked out headlights in the pic better in my opinion. If you black out the plastic cover then when the lights are turned on they will be dulled and show a more yellow cover. Plus when the lights are on you will be able to see every minute imperfection in the tint/paint on the plastic cover. In my opinion it comes across looking cheap
