Are my wheels improperly balanced?
So I just bought a used set of wheels from a member on this forum and when I opened the package and inspected the wheel, lo' and behold one of the wheel's had 35 + wheel weights on them.
Now i'm no expert on this subject but this seems a bit excessive. Not only is there a lot but the locations they are put on leaves me scratching my head. For example, in the picture you can see that the wheel weights are PARALLEL to each other instead of being clumped up on one side. Wouldn't putting wheel weights on parallel side defeat the purpose of BALANCING the wheels? I also found a patch where the wheel weight's are stacked on top of each other - not sure if this is normal or not. All in all am I being paranoid or should I go get them re-balanced properly? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2A...s=w940-h705-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rl...0=w940-h705-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Nm...g=w940-h705-no |
scrape off all the weights.
Also look for damage. If there is excessive wheel weights it was probably hard to balance. Might have been bad tires also. |
Don't remove them. Find a seasoned pro and let him/her see the current setup before completely rebalancing. It's good information.
And no, that ain't right. |

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll just take a seat over there ------> |
Am I being dull here or what is the reason you guys recommend removing the weights? Won't the tire shop pull 'em off before re-balancing anyways?

True but they are going to spend zero time cleaning up the wheels. I'd remove em and clean the areas with your preferred cleaner.
Also the wheels have no tires on them so it's hard to say why the weights are like that. So yes you could just take it to a shop with a set of tires and tell them to mount and balance them. |
