Scion FR-S/Toyota GT86 parts? Check with Subaru first!
 

Within the course of the last few months a few of my lug nuts got stuck on the stud and I couldn't take my wheel off. Had to break them and replace them. The first time around I went to Toyota dealer because I didn't want to wait and order them and got it from them directly. Stud and a lug nut were around $9-10 each. The second time I had that problem I was on my way to pick up another set and as I was passing by the Subaru dealership that was closer to my house it hit me that I can just go and ask them if they have them in stock. Luckily for me they did. $3.50 for a stud and $3 for a lug nut. Quite frankly I expected it to be the other way around thinking that Subaru would charge more for parts then Toyota. I was wrong. Makes me wonder what other parts they charge their own premium on. It might be just the dealerships in my area but the moral of the story is if you need some parts from the dealer it might be worth a while calling Subaru dealer as well and vise versa to get the best price. One of the benefits of having the twins!

Hmm, that's weird. Maybe the Toyota dealership you went to just likes to mark up the price that much. lol

Because when I broke one of my studs, I bought one from my local Toyota dealer & they only charged me somewhere around $3.50..

Another example: the pre-mixed OEM super blue coolant the twins use costs $33.79 @ Toyota and $20.79 @ Subaru.

That dealer is marking up prices. MSRP is a guideline and dealers are free to set whatever MSRP they want.

My experience with Toyota is they don't stock many of the FR-S parts. They will order them in but usually takes a few days or even weeks. Meanwhile it's a common part at Subaru and they have 10 on the shelf because it is used on 14 different models. I had to wait 2 weeks for the $5 clip that goes on the throwout bearing and Subaru had a box full.

Toyota has the oil filter for 14 bucks..versus Subaru's 5.42 that I pay where I live.

I have had a similar experience aswell. I have noticed almost everything is significantly cheaper at the Subaru dealership than at the Toyota stealership in my area.

When i used to work for Toyota i usually stock up on FRS parts. For example air filter, cabin filter and the oil filter/drain plug gasket. However Toyota do get the parts from Subaru so that is why the mark up is higher ( in most cases)

In my experience, most of the parts are less at the Subaru dealer. Some times the difference is significant...try pricing a full set of brake rotors.

Yea, like @Apoc said, a lot of parts are commonly used on other Subarus and will most likely be in stock versus a Toyota/Scion dealer.

Also, my local Toyota dealers quote me at least 100% higher prices than my local Subaru dealers, idk your experience may vary.

Yeah, it's just individual dealership pricing. They have a matrix (math equation) that changes the price from list (their cost from manufacturer) to what you pay at the counter. Luckily I work for a dealer and we have accounts with all the other local dealers, so I always pay list :thumbup:

Considering the car is mostly Subaru..... makes sense.

Toyota must have to buy the Subaru parts to re sell. Thus the markup
