Have to replace entire assembly to replace fuel filter?

I'm at about 80k with my FR-S now so I *should* replace my fuel filter per the manual. However, I've called 4 different Toyota and Subaru dealerships for the part and the answers have ranged from "I can't even find it on the parts computer" to "the only thing I can sell you is the entire fuel pump assembly for $400."

Already searched the forums and Google, but unfortunately I think I'm one of the first people to actually be hitting this mileage. I also considered just not changing it because it doesn't have any symptoms of a bad filter, but I'm selling the car soon and I don't want to tell people it's behind on service.

What the heck do I do? Anybody successfully just got the filter portion to the fuel pump assembly like you can get for any normal car?

EDIT: (credit to mav1178) Fuel filter is available here for $21: http://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru_201...2072AA121.html

Yeah your gonna have to pull the whole pump assembly to change it. You should be able to get the filter on its own, however its still a pain the the ass to change.

Didn't even think to look up the part on Subaru's website. Good call. $21 is a way better number than $400!

My Toyota dealer said the same thing when I was in to pick up spark plugs and the fuel filter. The parts guy at the Subie dealer next door is pretty savvy, and I figured he would find it separate from the pump, but haven't had a chance to stop by yet.

Thanks @mav1178

Thanks @mav1178

I think we established in some thread that to do both the plugs and filter you may as well just strip the car and just rebuild it when you are done. The service manual instructions for changing that damn filer look like instructions for building a Death Star!

No kidding. I'm a little intimidated. Normally it wouldn't bother me too much, but now it's going to be a while before I can get to it...just had rotator cuff surgery on Friday. It's going to be a month before I can drive, let alone contort/twist my arm to the point necessary to do these two jobs.

There's quite a few of us on here with higher mileage. I still haven't changed the fuel filter, I'll get around to trying it someday.

Good luck with that time frame. I'm having a small deck built to install a hot tub and my builder had cuff surgery in late November and just returned to work about 3 weeks ago...........

That's only the sock filter. There is another filter built into the canister (part number 42052D). You can purchase the outer canister assembly minus the fuel pump for about $120-$150 USD. This is typical with Subaru in tank fuel filters. Mine cost about $200 CAN to buy here in Calgary from Subaru. I can't say this often enough but I would seriously stay away from Toyota dealerships until they figure out how to properly service these cars. Every encounter I have had with Toyota around replacing anything like spark plugs and fuel filters has left me with the impression they don't have a clue. Here is an old thread about the fuel filter getting pulled apart. It's gruesome so you may need to cover the eyes of young folks

Total opposite here. The Subie dealer has no clue about these cars and the Toyota one is right on the ball. Just a local thing I guess.
