After market security
I was wondering if anyone thought about installing after market security systems in their FR-S. I've personally only had one break in (knock on wood) and that happened on a vacation trip out of state. But still, I've always been nervous about my car even though it's completely stock and I don't have any valuables in my car.
However, I'm going to be even more cautious when I get my fr-s, it being my first new car purchase (not to mention it looks stunning) and I was thinking the security system that comes with the car may not be much of a deterrent if someone had their mind set on stealing or breaking into the car. Has anyone thought about or already installed an after market security system in their fr-s? |
What security system comes with the car? I don't think it's standard.
I was thinking of getting a viper alarm, heard good things about those http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...p-n-5702V.html |
Your local street thug won't be able to easily figure out the ignition immobilizer override on your car. They probably just smashed the window and are just looking for your iPhone stashed in the glovebox (tsk tsk...)
Most current car security systems can trigger a relay/voltage output for auxiliary devices. Tie them to a GSM communicator to send the signal to your cell phone or email (http://www.uplink.com/Technology/Uplink-2500__2500.aspx). These are GSM modules that you would need to purchase a secondary cell phone subscription for (Usually about $10/month through Uplink for a personal subsciption). In my own line of work, we use actual vehicle tracking devices. It helps our employer keep track of us in the field. Something like these: http://www.guardmagic.com/01-engl/2e...sm-product.htm These are GPS devices that plug into the OBDII port. They update every minute to a server. They will show current location, speed, etc. Should any perp ever steal your car, you can track the location of it. These are like lojack, but normally less expensive. Our current fee for these systems is about $14/month plus about $200 for the GPS module. |
I'm curious about this too. The last time a bought Toyota the finance guy charged me a chunk to activate an already installed alarm system. When I bought the FR-S at another dealer, they didn't offer an alarm but they did offer Lo-Jack, which I bought. I did sign a form saying I turned down an $1100 alarm install along with some other extras - I figured I'd do some research around here but surprisingly a search for "Alarm" doesn't turn up much yet.
