steering wheel controls
Hi all,
I can't help but wish I had some steering wheel controls to at least manage/navigate my audio (since that's what I use/change the most); taking my eyes off the road so frequently to change songs, equalizer settings, etc. seems, to me, really hazardous. Of course, it would be nice to be able to answer and end calls as well, and perhaps a number of other simple, one-touch things. Does anyone have any ideas on where to get and/or how to integrate some type of steering wheel controls for the receiver? I did a quick search and came up with nothing. I think it would be great to come up with something, and I'm sure it could be done via bluetooth. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Anything I happen to come across in my research, I will be sure to post here as well. |
One thing that might help my searches, and anyone else interested, off-hand, does anyone know the actual electronic manufacturer of the Audio/Navigation system receiver?

Fujitsu Ten Model: FT0021A

I'm missing this also. It was easy to get spoiled by them in my crz

I really wanted steering wheel controls and was very hopeful when one of the concept cars had them. Still would be nice to have them, BUT after getting the car, I agree with someone who said that the unit sits very close to you on your driving position, so its not an issue they are not included. Probably in later years, that will be an upgrade. Keep the thread updated if you find any good alternative.

Find a 2012 WRX/STI steering wheel and airbag. I'm guessing everything should swap in, but you'll have to custom run the wires for the steering wheel controls.
|
Meh. Volume is close to the wheel anyway and I use voice commands for navigation and music.
Having written that, I wouldn't object to a "voice command" wheel button that'd also pause/resume and answer/mute/un-mute (hold to hangup). |

Thanks for the tip, however. |
While I like the audio controls in my Versa, I like the BRZ's wheel better. It lets you know the steering wheel is all about business.
|
FWIW, using voice commands for music is worse than just using the touchscreen.
|
I think I'm going to try a Parrot device.

might come out in next year's BRZ model.

No thanks. I like no buttons on my steering wheels just like my Cayman R.
|
Yeah I got used to them not being there pretty quick.
|
phone calls:
Bluetooth headset connected to your phone. Stereo controls: once you get used to the location of the buttons (unless they're tiny) you can just quickly glance over and press the button. Its not like you have to lean over to the very opposite side of the head unit to reach a button or knob..... |

This looks pretty cool. Where did it come from though? preproduction? |

Wish it had it, not a deal breaker though as I don't flip through songs/ change volume all that often.
|
for 28k this should be included in the car.
That's why it is over priced. |

So, I'm watching this thread. |
we've had this discussion a few times on this and other forums...get ready for the BS of "this is a sports-car" you don't need 'em argument, or the other one that cracks me up...buttons make it hard to drive aggressively...both are silly and assinine.
It is 2012...it should have them...clearly a "ran out of time" or dev budget shortfall...either way...can almost guarantee that they'll be on a future model... it didn't stop me from buying and enjoying the car but aggravates me EVERY time I need to fiddle with the touch screen...and think how unsafe it is to be doing that instead of simple buttons on the wheel...IMHO ;) |
Steering wheel controls... What else do you want a backup camera?

This is one feature that I really wish had made it to the production model, at least as an option, even if they toned it down a little to make it less cluttered. Touch screen radios are very annoying to use.

I honestly love the plain face of the wheel, and tend to end up not using steering wheel controls except for cruise control. Which I'm kinda wanting not on my 86 anyway, because I rather dislike it. But I'm weird. The Honda has cruise control buttons and I agree for a daily it's annoying not to have wheel controls.
|
Personally love the no buttons on the steering wheel. Tho who ever designed the touch screen interface clearly doesn't drive the car. Alot of wasted space and the buttons are way to small. They give large amount of space to things no one really pushes often or cares about. But they make the volume buttons small and sometimes have to glance at the screen to raise/lower volume and change stations.

When I would AutoX in my Speed3 (which had steering wheel controls), I'd hit the damn buttons by accident all the time!
I don't care that this car lacks them. |
I vote to have them because at the moment I don't autox (but plan to), so I don't worry about accidentally hitting them. They're just safer to use and I DO switch songs often. My fingers are thick and the buttons are small. It's pretty much impossible to do a no-look switch like I used to with old units that were analog.
Eventually I'll swap out the unit to something MUCH more user-friendly, though, especially since I don't care for NAV (only one road in and one road out). |

I use steering wheel control all the time in my current car, most useful button is "mute" and worried little bit of no control on BRZ.
But I really like uncluttered look of clean steering wheel and minimal buttons on the dash. These days most cars' dashboard seem want to be a jet fighter cockpit, too too many bloody buttons and switches. Just enjoy the simplicity this car is pursuing guys. |
