Auto FR-S - Oil Leak - Front Left of Engine
4 Attachment(s)
I have a 2013 Scion FR-S that's automatic and has about 33,000 miles on it. The only modifications to the car is a 2 inch Perrin Cat-back exhaust and a drop in K&N Air Filter. Recently I have started to smell burning oil from the cabin, so I looked around in the engine bay and discovered a bad oil leak coming from the front left of the engine. I have looked around and couldn't find any threads or posts about this and was wondering if anyone knew what it was coming from and what I should do? As in, can I fix it or will it need to go to the dealer? I'm still in the warranty period.
Here are some pictures of the leak: Attachment 134456 Attachment 134457 Attachment 134458 Attachment 134459 |
Front timing cover leak. Covered under warranty, will require engine pull.

For future reference, that's the right side...when specifying right or left sides of a car, it is always from the driver's (seated) perspective. Just an FYI...not being a smart ass.

I'm not seeing this leak... am I just blind??...
Are you referring to that blackness on the block? It looks like undercoating/paint... If it leaked that much, I would assume it to be dripping. |
WELCOME to the forum @iPlayDrums ...........
Sure enough, it appears the cam chain cover is leaking. As a DIY you may consider checking the torque on the cam cover bolts in that area. Or, better yet, take it to the dealer for an evaluation and fix. humfrz |

This may not be the cam seal. I've seen a bunch of FRS/BRZ have issues with the dip stick area spewing oil from time to time.
The timing cover bolts are lower than where the leak/seeping is in your photo. So I'm leaning towards the dip stick issue theory. Regardless, get it to a dealer and fixed. - I had the dealer pull my motor and reseal my cam areas. They did a great job. |

Bump AT Trans Leak
Was the dip stick the cause of the leak that you guys had or was it something else? I have about 70k miles on my FRS and the Automatic trans is starting to leak. I see a similar wet area, but it looks like the gasket for the trans oil pan may be failing. I didn't notice it until a buddy and I were installing a new front pipe to my car and the old one had a good amount of fluid burned on it. I am going to take a better look at it over the weekend so see what could be the overall cause of it.

i would take it to dealer and ask them to clean it, then pour UV dye in the crankcase, drive it for a few hundred miles and come back in and it should be visible. |
