I came across this tip recently and it is great. AFTER washing, rather than run your bare hand over the paint, stick your hand in one of those zip-seal plastic bags and feel through that.

Whats the test for specifically?

I am assuming fallout, but I rather run my hand over the car onces its soaped during a wash like your supposed to to minimize risk of scratching the paint.

Yes. All the replies are on the money. Wash first then you only run your hand in the plastic bag over the paint lightly. You are just detecting fallout etc embedded in the paint. You are not trying to get them off.
The paint can feel like sandpaper as the plastic goes over the crud if you have a lot of it. Then you can clay or even carefully scratch the particles off with a fingernail. A fingernail does not seem to damage but do not drag the particle over the paint. It is tedious but lots of people have scratched paint using clay.

Gently being the operative word. That said, if the car and bag are clean, you'll only be feeling for embedded particles (that would need clay to remove them), which won't get dragged across the paint to scratch it... because they're embedded. I don't know if this was mentioned but this is intended to be done AFTER washing/drying the paint.

So, unless the paint is super soft and/or you get grit/dirt/whatever caught between the bag and the paint, the baggie test has a very low risk of damaging the finish.

If you are wondering why bother getting off particles you can feel but not actually see, it is worth doing for a couple of reasons
1) they are likely to be ferro-magnetic e.g. from rail tracks. They will be attached to steel panels by weak magnetic attraction and with time actually get into the clear coat because they will grow as they rust there. You may see tiny rust spots eventually. At least one car maker goes back and forth continually spraying water over new cars awaiting shipment to wash off industrial fallout.
Treatment with an oxalic acid wash is needed if left too long.
Regular washing and waxing can prevent.
2) after washing your car, if the paint is truly clean, with practice you can get a slow smooth flow of water from the hose and drag off the water as a "sheet" , leaving the paint dry. Particles on the paint will grab the water and you will have to dry.

Test for really smooth paint.


Drag a bikini model across the car.
Is suit stays on all is good.
If suit comes off paint is rough but who cares?

You have trivialised what is a very serious topic. You should NEVER drag something as heavy as her across the paint as the tiniest bit of grit will scratch. Also, if you MUST use her, the bikini must be given a good brushing down to ensure no grit is on it and preferably it should be made of microfibre. I am also annoyed that you attracted several "likes" while I have received none.

I second this. I had a 90lb girl sit on the hood of my GTI and leave a butt dent...she never said anything... :mad0260:regardless how hot a girl is, I don't feel they belong on cars.

What's with you guys from the Bay Area .......??

I girl like that could sit on anything I have ...... :D
