Modded car Insurance costs?
 

What sort of prices are people now paying to insure their modded 86's?

I'm with the insurers that starts with 'Y' and my insurance has actually dropped annually from $750, three years ago to $545 this year.. I am over 50, rating 1, do less than 7k kms per year, retired and lock the car in a garage when not used so that is a massive positive with insurance bargaining and puts me in a special category.

Except for wheels, Axle back and front pipe my car is mechanically standard, but now my cars warranty has expired at just 18.5k's, I intended fitting the stuff I've accumulated.

Before I do I'm just wondering

1. What premiums are costing for modded cars.
2. Whether all mods are being disclosed. e.g. Headers, suspension, SC & TC's etc, etc.
3. Issues people are having getting insurers to accept modded cars.
4. Premium increases people are experiencing after modding.
5. Reputable insurers prepared to insure modded cars.

Don't reply, or adjust it, if your reg is included in your user name or your signature because I have heard insurers check these forums to search for clients who have failed to disclose mods.

I am with Famous Insurance.
$1550 a year. I am 37, rating 1.
comes with coverage for 3 track days (which I am going to cancel as I don't even have my CAMS license any more) this is around $300.
I sent them all my mods with prices for them all, they cover me for $43k at the moment.
Mods include all my suspension work, stereo, exterior mods etc

We don't need gap insurance here in Australia :p

One other thing, the cost of insuring an 86 is more than the cost of a BRZ ;)

Its not a huge amount, but if you do online quotes for the two cars with the same details, the BRZ will be cheaper.

For those with modded cars. I Just had a quote from Famous for $830 with a $650 excess, which for a modded car seems very reasonable. Market value only though so the policy would need fine tuning which may lead to a slightly higher or perhaps lower premium.

Certainly worth getting a quote off for anyone with a modded cars.

Pretty obvious the BRZ is better risk because
a] not as many were sold due to the purchasing process they were launched with. It actually put me off buying one. Less on road has to mean less chances of being in a collision or stolen.
b] More half witted idiot P platers buying Toyotas then wrapping them around poles while attempting drifting. Becoming a bigger problem with the number now being sold cheap second hand. Lots with green P plates on them. This is not a car for a P plater regardless of the low power output. An LSD in the hands of the inexperienced can get them in to a lot of trouble before they realise it.

What's the difference in price between second hand variants?

I haven't really looked into that, Not sure my car will ever get sold..

But saying that, I was looking into selling it and buying an Audi or Volvo wagon a couple of days ago..

If I were to become a bit of an ol'fart I would certainly consider a Volvo - they're really nice, that's if I could bfukd spending the dosh :/ I would never consider an Audi, overpriced junk.

Would steer away from the Audi purely because they are the flavour of the month with the Apex gang...😬

Funny one of the best sleepers I ever saw was an old Volvo (older box shaped one from the 80's) with a fully worked small block where the old 4 cylinder had been. Driven by an ol'fart too as I recall.

Before i was an ol'fart myself I built a 1967 Toyota Crown with 302GT Windsor, FMX and 9" diff.

Modded cars used to be easy to build thanks to solid chasis, big engine bays, no CanBus or ECU bs, and little if any enforcement of regs.

They were the days when you could open a hood and actually see the engine. Having said that one ting the 86 does have going for it is a roomy engine bay.

yeah except for either side of the heads for spark plug change - that will be a challenge :|
