2way coaxial vs component system

So I no that a 2 way in the door only uses the woofer and leaves the tweeter part useless. Am I better off with this and then buying a separate tweeter or a component system with external crossovers like this set?

Not sure how well it would work since the doors and tweeters are powered totally separately with the dash Mids in harmony with the tweeters

How do you plan to power the component set? I'd recommend getting an external amplifier to run them if you go with the comps. To your original question, though, I'd go with components.

I'm getting the Alpine ktp-445u that every1 seems to love on here. So that leaves me 2 extra 2ohm channels open. But I feel lik I wud b double powering the speakers then

Get a pair of 4ohm nominal components, bridge the alpine power pack.

So I just realized I need a 3 way to keep everything working properly. Which is getting me back to the cost of OEM audio+ and makin the power pack useless :mad0260:

You do not need a 3 way set. Get 2 way components and an amp; tweets in the dash, drivers in the doors. You can mount the amp and crossovers in the back where the factory amp is and use it's speaker level input for your new amp and the factory amp output wiring for the output from your crossovers, just need to run 2 new lines for the tweeters from the crossovers.

So disable the dash Mids altogether then since they only work if the tweeter work too (stock wiring)

Yes. They are garbage, as are the OEM tweeters. Pull the mids out and make a mounting bracket for your new tweets to sit in that hole.

I have focal components up front (6.5 woofer + 1.5" tweeter), and focal 5.25" 2-way coaxials in the rear. JL 300/4, and a JL 10W7 with a JL 500/1. The fronts are all mounted in stock location (with addition of the 6.5" bracketry for the door)

If you're going to get new speakers, do it right and ditch all the OEM crap and do the component fronts with aftermarket amp at the very least.

This is exactly what I did

Atm I am running ktp 445u bridged powering alpine 60c comps, and then a set of infinity 3.5 with a 200 hz cap in line run off the hu power. I have the alpine scaled back to - 4 dB on the tweeters. I am quite happy with the setup.

I wanted 3 way to put actual woofers in the door

Keep in mind, a simple 2 way is almost alway better than a 3 way unless you have the processing power to tune it. You need at least time alignment for each speaker, and 16 bands of eq per side.

ah ok, makes sense looking at the OEM+

TOOSTUBBORN2FAIL 03-11-2016 02:09 PM

The tune is what makes the oem+ system get good reviews. The speakers themselves are just ok. But, someone spent the time to tune to this specific vehicle.
