Should I have just got a new motor?

Now, do you guys think that Toyota should have given me a new motor considering that they have already pulled it 3 times (just this week) to fix the timing(still not fixed), have put over $4,000 into repairs and are still waiting on new parts. I think a new motor costs around $7,500? and I just don't know how to feel about having all these things replaced on a 19,000mi. motor. They also told me, if they have to, they'll have the techs from Japan that they're in contact with come over and try to fix my car (excessive much?).

Probably would have been best yes but don't know all the facts or their side of the story. It is very possible that they simply have not received authorization from Toyota to swap the engine. The dealer probably made about $1,000 on your car so they are not going to just throw a $7500 engine in out of the goodness of their hearts. They will only do what Toyota will pay them to do and not one thing more.


When they say they will have the tech from Japan look at the issue that does not mean they are going to fly somebody over just to work on your car. It can be done electronically or they will have a tech that is assigned to and lives in your region come and look. This is not an abnormal things for them to do when the local dealer just can't figure it out.

No, what you should do is Lemon Law the car and get you money back. Check the laws in your state, especially if their attempt to fix it drags on.


I know we all expected issues with the first year, but amazes me major problems continue.

For 7500 you can build a motor that will hold 600+ hp all day LOL.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but just wanted to give an update. I got the car back around 19,500mi. drove it until 20,000mi. and the camshaft sensor codes reappeared and so did the CEL w/ limp mode. Reported to the dealer and kept driving. About a month ago at 31,000mi. I was driving in town and was coming up to stop sign and as I pulled away, the car was making a faint clacking noise (at the time I though it was clutch chatter or flywheel noise). Something seemed off with throttle response. Decided to drive straight home and the noise continued to get louder. Got home, shut off the car and waited a bit. I decided to start it back up and my heart dropped... Rod bearing failure... Had the car towed to Toyota and they said it was the rod bearing #3... Destroyed almost the entire motor, they said it would have to be completely replaced. After a long week of getting no calls from Toyota, they told me it wouldn't be under warranty! I'll keep who ever is interested, posted. I love these cars, I've owned 2 and I'd buy another, but this is ridiculous...

I'm assuming it wasn't covered under warranty due to the fact that he drove 10,000 miles with a CEL/limp mode. even if the dealership told you to not worry, I would still have brought it in. now it is most likely Toyota saying that it wasn't covered under warranty and that whatever the dealership told you was null and void.

What ended up happening?

Edit: last post was in Feb selling items probably parting out and last login early July, we'll probably never know.
