Need helps draining the transmission fluid.
 

I recently just broke in my car. Should I drain both the engine and transmission oil? And what brand do you guys recommend? I also want to learn doing it myself any helpful video would be great :)

No need to change the oil and transmission fluid. Just follow the regular maintenance schedule for those. The engineers that designed the car knew what they were doing when they set the schedule.

About the engine and transmission oil ........ like @Tcoat said, I suggest you just follow the maintenance schedule in your manual.

Some feel it's better to change the crankcase and MT oil sooner because of a buildup of metal shavings. Personally, I think that's a concern of the past.

Do they still give the first three oil changes free at the dealer? If so, I'd suggest you take advantage of that program.

This will give you lots of time to :search: and find out how to change the oils.

Thanks for the help I was just reading in another thread about changing your transmission fluid early because of metal shards or something like that and yeah the dealership I went gives you 6 free oil change :thanks:

Personally, I would swap the transmission and rear end oil with Motul 300 ASAP.


At 10,000 miles mine had a ton of metal shavings on the diff plug. Transmission fluid looked good but it definitely feels better when shifting and not as clunky when cold. It is worth it for piece of mind....the first fluid change on the diff in these cars is usually pretty gross. The magnetic plug always has shavings.

Yep, there are two schools of thought about when to change the MT and differential oils.

The new school (made up of the old codgers like @Tcoat and myself) who believe that the beginning oils are good for a while. Then there is the old school (made up of usually new folks) that feel the oils should be changed after a few thousand miles.

Now, go figure that old - new bit ....... :iono:

Now, I understand that ol @Tcoat has had the OEM transmission oil in place for 40,000 + miles. Maybe when he goes to drain it out, it won't come out and he will have to flush it out with hot kerosene OR remove the transmission, crack the case and scrape it out with a putty knife ...... :eyebulge:

I think i might try it this weekend, how many liter do i need for the transmission and the diff, would one bottle of Motul gear 300 cover it. And last question how often should this be replaced?

Search for and download the repair/service manual. It lists all the how to and info you need.

You need 4L of fluid(only use about 3.5ish of it though).

18k I think is when they say to swap it...but it wont hurt doing it more often either.

Frankly, with the way the diff looks after 18k, I'd do it sooner IMO.

A little over 2000 miles here on a manual 2016 BRZ. I changed my fluids last weekend. The transmission fluid was clear but had a metallic sheen. The differential fluid was black and the drain plug was coated in metal shavings. I think these cars benefit from doing an early fluid change once everything breaks in. I was surprised at how much junk was in the differential. Mine looked similar to the one posted above but with only 2000 miles on it.

I also recommend Motul if you can get it. After doing some extensive reading, it seems like most people have the best luck with Motul in the differential and transmission.

I have also read good things about Pennzoil Synchromesh for the transmission. This is what I used. It shifts perfectly now. I noticed a little clunkyness going into 2nd, as so many others have reported. After changing the fluid, it shifts much smoother. For the rear differential I used Mobil1 75w-90 gear oil. Like I said, I didn't have access to Motul and for me, Mobil was a close second.
