Where to go for oil changes and other jobs?
 

Hi! I was wondering where you guys go to for Engine oil changes, Transmission/diff oil changes (I think I want to invest in that Motul Gear 300 soon), etc (A place to bolt on an exhaust, and other related things!) in Seattle area?

Or, should I just be going to the Dealer (Carter Subaru) for them? Would they le tme bring me own transmission oil (Motul) for the change? Sorry, I'm a car noob, trying to learn here. Thanks a lot!

if you want to do it yourself check out Jay's garage in kirkland, you can rent a lift for a reasonable price, they have all the tools you'll need and someone who can help you if you have any questions. Hell if you throw it up on here, or the local facebook group i'm sure someone would join you to help (myself included if i'm free considering i've done everything you've listed to my car several times)

another option is going to see Ishii motors in bellevue, reasonable price and knowledgeable people who work there. (i believe the owner drives an FRS) i've been using them for a couple years now to work on my forester and my old mazda. I'll probably bring them my brz from time to time now that i don't have a garage.

Have the dealer do all your oil changes while the car is still under warranty.
Having them do it and keeping the records is worth the hassle if you ever need warranty work.


I am more than capable of doing my own work on this car, but I use the dealer JUST for their record keeping. And you don't really save that much $$ by doing it yourself.


And you can do your own trans fluid change with little more than some jackstands and a floorjack.
The hardest part (being the BRZ) is removing the underbelly pan and that is trivial.
If it was a FRS, I would say you can do it in the gutter without jackstands.

What's the local facebook group called? I was not aware we had one. hahah.

I'll check those out - I'm not against doing things myself, but I am mechanically challenged and I'd definitely need someone to teach me step by step the first (or second?) time I attempt to do anything. So hopefully those 2 places have patient people willing to help me out..!

As for dealer, My 2013 brz has about 15k miles, I don't think I'll put on another 7k miles before the basic warranties is out (ends in June of this year). Since I got the car CPO, I have an extended powertrain warranty for 7yr/100k (until 2020) but I don't think that covers oil changes (right?).

why not try it yourself as the things you are trying to do are fairly easy. You can learn a thing or two.

Hmm.. I'm not against it at all - but since this BRZ is my first ever car, and also my first ever manual - I have this anxiety/paranoia about how much damage I've been doing to it. I'm always subconscious about breaking the clutch/transmission and so on..

This fear makes me fearful/cautious about doing the oil all by myself because I feel like I'd do something terribly wrong and ruin the car. Those are my personal reasons. Hope you understand.. :^(

eh, i've got 40k miles and 0 dealer visits. at this rate the only thing that could break that the dealer would cover under warranty would be my stereo and even then, they'll probably just deny me saying my UEL header caused the problem :lol:. however you can still do your own oil changes and be covered, just need to provide proof it was done. the problem the OP might run into is that if the first 15k miles aren't recorded, they could still give him problems and not cover a warranty claim. I've read a couple post on this forum about warranty claims being denied on used cars because the dealer didn't know what happened before they sold the car again. Aint that just fucked up?

Yeah so couple of the local groups are 86 nights (def join this one) its run by the best tuner in the area and a lot of good information to dig around and find. 86 sessions (or just friend eight-six sessions), and there's also east-side 86 or something like that, but that one isn't very active.

now for the powertrain warranty, that covers things like engine/transmission/rear diff. the reason the poster above is saying bring it to the dealer is that they can record all oil changes. Should you need to make a warranty claim the first thing they'll look for is to make sure you followed the maintenance interval as lined out in the owners manual, then take a look to make sure any modifications made didn't cause the failure.

Doesn't the car come with Toyota-Care from the factory meaning free maintenance for 3 years?

and i don't think a used frs does either unless you fight for it.

I usually go to Axis Automotive off Aurora and like 95th. Guy's name is Alex and he runs a one-man show. He'll help you with pretty much anything besides suspension work (he's helped me with exhaust stuff and my rear diffuser), and if he doesn't think he wants to take the job on, he'll recommend a shop that will. Pricing is very fair.

If you hit him up, tell him "Mike with the white FR-S" sent you. :)

It should be transferable. I ran the VIN on my car and it said it was still eligible.
