1000 miles

I'm about to break 1000 miles on my car and read some posts that it's a good idea to get an oil change at this time.

Are there a lot of people doing this and is there some special type of oil I should get or is the manufacturer recommended good enough?

Is it okay to bring it to any mechanic or should I just bring it to toyota for now?

I'm waiting for 5000 but lots of people have done it beforehand (100, 1000, 2000 miles you name it).

The Mobil 1 0w20 Toyota uses is fine (my dealer has said Mobil 1 is their supplier), 5.8 quarts I believe. Though a few have said do 5 quarts, check, and top off.

It's easy to do the oil change, but maybe a Toyota/Subaru dealer would be more familiar with the car.

Does toyota charge extra for an oil change compared to a regular mechanic?

Has anybody gotten their oil changed yet at a mechanic - were there any issues/

The car holds 5.5 quarts plus the size of your filter. With the stock filter 5.8 was perfect for me. I changed it out at 1400m (I was going to do 1k but got busy).

After that I will follow the regular guidelines.

If you do it yourself it's a good way to get to know your car, but most people don't have the ramps/chucks to get the car up. It is pretty easy however.

I haven't done it yet but it looks as though this oil change is going to be second only to my jeep in terms of ease.

FRS has the filter in the best position ever but the jeep never required jack/ramps.

Should any problems arise with the car, it's easier to prove maintenance was done properly if the dealer has been doing it.

You *can* use anyone and just save the receipts, but still... using the dealer removes that question mark.

what is the advantage to changing the oil at 1000 miles instead of 5000? i believe the manual just says every 5000 miles. i've heard of "breaking in" an engine, but i was under the impression that this is somehow done at the factory before the car is delivered now?

In case there are metal shavings from break in floating around in the oil.
