My general feelings on the subject are this: if your coilovers cost less than the factory dampers, there's a good chance that you're compromising on something. Usually it's ride/damper quality in the cheap Taiwanese stuff, since a lot of people incorrectly associate harshness with sportiness. The STs and Flex Zs are noteworthy options in this price point because people find them to be pretty well damped (for what they are). This is largely a qualitative statement, yes. It's just not cost effective to have quantifiable independent testing done on entry-level coils, when the vast majority of buyers won't know or care about the differences. All else being equal, I'd also prefer to buy suspension components from suspension manufacturers. There's a long history of Taiwanese coilovers having iffy build quality and questionable damping. tl;dr: OH NO, CALL A MODERATOR, HE SAID THINGS I DISAGREE WITH BUT WON'T CALL HIM OUT ON. |
Will put my 2 cents in.
I had a set of GodSpeed Mono-Max RS coils. Good enough to go low and have moderate comfort if you're willing to spend time driving around then pull over and adjust the damping settings. I managed to get them to a livable state. I then had a set of FA 500's with Swift springs, conical bearings, etc and I didn't find them as comfy driving around and being low. I'm now on Tein S-Tech springs. These are better comfort wise than both sets of coils. I'm also about half as low as I was on coils. I'd recommend saving yourself some money and buy some springs for around $200. Edit: anyone who says that their entry level coils are comfier than stock is a liar. What I can say is: OEM:passed gf test. GodSpeed: passed gf test after tinkering. FA: passed gf test, barely. Tein springs: passed gf test. |
