Brand New Transmission.. 5th gear rattles??

Hello all,

Just had my transmission replaced under warranty yesterday and I've noticed every time I shift into 5th gear the whole shifter assembly vibrates vigorously. The problem ONLY happens in 5th gear and can be recreated every time I shift into 5th wether i'm shifting from 4th to 5th, or 6th to 5th. I will be holding the shifter and then can feel the shifter vibrate a noticable amount more than every other gear. I will most likely end up calling the dealer to see why it's doing this but I want to check with you guys first to see if this might be normal for a new transmission?

hmmmm........well, mine never did do that.

When you say it vibrates, does it vibrate when your hand is NOT on the shifter?

If so, can you "see" it vibrate (move)? Can you hear it vibrate (hand not on the shifter).

I can feel it vibrate when my hand is on the shifter. Unfortunately I can not see it vibrate. But I was able to test it some at lunch today and it vibrates faster to correspondance how fast the gear is going/ aka I can feel it vibrating faster when I'm in higher RPMs and have my hand on the shifter.

I know something like that typically seems normal but when it's the only gear that does it and it's doing it this vigorously is concerning.

The best way I can explain this rattle is that the shifter feels like it's rubbing up against something thats rotational in 5th gear and translates the rotation as vibrations through the shifter.

Well, the smart a _ _ remark/solution would be to take your hand off of the shifter after it's in gear .....;)

The next time I get up into 5th gear ...... I'll see if mine will do that.

If I were you, I'd give your new transmission a few hundred miles, to see if it settles down.

I also loose my warranty in about 1k miles. I know that should be the smart thing as I normally never rest my hand on the shifter but I felt it while shifting gears so I decided to start testing it.

Well, it that case, you might consider going back to the dealer and have a tech to take a ride to give a second opinion (that would get your concern on paper).

While you're at the dealership, ask to drive another car, to get a comparison.

Then, if the tech says it's "normal" and you can (or cannot) feel a difference with the other car, give it about 500 miles to break in.

I'll give the dealership a call on Saturday.

Good plan!

I just returned from a trip up to the gym ...... well, not exactly, I was waiting outside the take-em-away-U-bake-pizza place (for them to make a pizza) and watched those people in the gym, sweating on those machines ..... and getting nowhere ....... anyway, I put my 2013 FR-S in 5th gear on the way back .... and didn't notice any vibration ...... whether mu hand was on the gear shift or not.

Time for a nap ..... I'm all wore out ...... watching those folks at the gym ..... ZZZZZ

Just guessing but that could be one of those symptoms you get when your transmission isn't fully sat on transmission mount but it's a bit off. Which is possible since they probably used the old mount?

Sheep, do you feel it in 6th gear as well? Do you feel this while you're putting pressure on the gearshift, or all the time?

This is not normal. I had my transmission replaced because of a bad 5th gear syncro. The new transmission has been smooth as glass since day one. Bring it back to the dealer. This is not right.

Oh, please don't say "glass" ....... too many people already think our transmissions are made of glass ....... :confused0068:

Even if you rested your hand on it, this shouldnt happen. This close to warranty end you should take it in ASAP!

Don't let them blame you for vibration. Mine doesn't do that, but I did notice 6th gear has high frequency whine.
