Anyone know a local machine shop that can create a custom "washer"?
 

I'm looking for a custom sized washer made of Stainless Steel 303 with OD 20mm, ID 17mm, and a thickness of 6mm. I've tried calling a few places but they're not willing to make just one piece.

No, but with these dimensions if you call it a "spacer" rather than a washer, you'll have much better luck finding one pre-fabricated. Also, you might have to convert your metric measurements to standard.

nice! yeah, when i searched for "washers" not much came up, then I turned to "fasteners" and found some places with almost the right size, but never coming up. Knowing the right terminology is so helpful haha. Will look into spacers now. Thanks!

30 min, no success. Looks like custom make is the only way to go. Basically, I'm looking to place this spacer/shim inside my shift knob. This way it will allow my Raceseng reverse lock out to make contact with the metal spacer/shim and produce what I hope will be a satisfying metallic "click". I had this when I owned an accompanying Raceseng Slammer but that knob is too wide for me.

Now rocking an Sti shift knob and it's all plastic and deep inside, so that's what this piece is for.

I'm thinking I'd try cutting a sliver of pipe and finishing it with a file. Just need chunk of pipe.

Can you modify/cut or perhaps combine two smaller off the shelf parts? Otherwise I know of a tool repair place I drive by almost every day that certainly can machine the spacer you're looking for. Will get the name of it on the way home today if you still need it then.

My specifications for the piece has to be exact, however I think converting to standard it's 3/4" OD, 5/8" ID and 1/4" thick. Just a rare combination it seems. I gave up on the thickness but the OD and ID combo isn't there either. Would try cutting but I don't have access to any type of equipment. I'd like for this piece to be precision cut too. WC Lathewerks (who makes custom shift knobs) quoted me $25 but found that too much, although I understand making something custom does take time and effort. I might just take him up on that offer.

$25 is a lot for a spacer, but sometimes you gotta pay to play. In the long run, what's an extra $15 bucks when your sanity is on the line :)

Just to throw a hunk of pipe into a lathe for one single cut is a minimum half hour. You aren't going to find a career machinist at walmart.

$25 for a custom one-off order of a specific spacer isn't bad. that $25 includes material cost, labor cost, and specialty equipment costs. plus chris at WCL is a perfectionist so his labor cost alone is worth it imo. if i were you, i'd just pay up and get it done exactly the way you want in one shot and not have to deal with make-shifting one by yourself.

Yeah, from my emails with him, he's definitely a perfectionist. I'm now comfortable with his asking price. But I do have an ebay guy who does custom work as well for $10 minimum, gonna try him first.
