I would never buy a Scion. Awful car selection. Their showing at the auto show was laughable, a bunch of cheap ugly cars, and the FR-S.
That pretty much nails the definition of "halo car." Which is what the FR-S was always meant to be for Scion.

I am 100% with you on this. I bet it was planned years ago

Did anyone else notice on there plate renewal this year lists the frs's vehicle make as toyota?
I purchased my used 2013 FR-S from a Toyota dealership in May of 2015.

The invoice from the dealer, my vehicle tax registration, and vehicle registration all call the car a "Toyota Scion FR-S."

mdm 02-04-2016 06:45 PM

Even on NHTSA safety website Scions are listed under Toyota, not as separate make.

Maybe Toyota would called the Toyota Forolla lol

So I wonder, will it be marketed as the gt86 or just 86? Or they could pull off a Toyota FRS lol

Also will the trim now be upgraded to European spec?

GT/86 02-04-2016 07:35 PM

I think the iM would be the New Corolla Station Wagon

miyoshi82 02-04-2016 07:38 PM

I think they should try one year with the current generation model under the Toyota brand before giving it refresh look.

They are, it's just reintroduced in US but they have them in Europe & asia for a long time.

iM or I should say "Toyota Auris" are very nice looking in person compare to cars in the same segment. (There are 1.2L turbo version & Hybrid version of it that I know. O..O)

KR-S 02-04-2016 08:17 PM

I like the Auris name, but Toyota might just slap on the Matrix name on the iM assuming they do intend to change it, as the Matrix name was already established with the previous Corolla-based hatchback.

The level of shear stupidity (not you Turb) this minor change to the car itself has brought on fascinates me in a train wreck sort of way.

The cars are not changing other than whatever the 17 brings and that would have happened no matter what badges were on it.

They are not going to change value one single cent because they have Scion badges. The brand is gone not the freakn' cars.

They are now and always have been Toyota/Subaru cars. Scion never built a single car. Not even once.

There are loads of 86s around the world already that have the same or even less features as the FRS. People comparing a top tier GT86 to an FRS and saying "look at all the things they get" just ignore the bottom trim levels entirely.

The bottom trim of the European 86 cost roughly the same as an FRS. The top trim ones cost almost $8,000 more. You guys that think you are going to get GT86 equipped cars for close to FRS prices are in for a world of disappointment.

All BRZs are not top trim cars either even though some seem to forget this.

All trims around the world be it 86, GT86, FRS or BRZ are the same fuckin' car people. Some just have a few extra things bolted on them. That does not make them better or worse, just different. Many, many people don't want all that crap.

Scion is just in North America and although it may shock some of you to know this cars are sold and used elsewhere in the world. The death of Scion means nothing to the rest of the world. The world preferences and purchases do not revolve around North America no matter what you were taught in school.

This is not the death of the 86. If the 86 dies it had nothing to do with the Scion badge. See above.

Come on people get your heads screwed on straight and think before you start spewing crap about now being "rare" or "collectors items". It is still just a cheap sports car made for the masses.

Have they actually finished producing the last of the actual Scion FRS before they become Toyotas? I really want to buy a model from the current generation and this news really messes up my plans to buy a new one. I don't want to buy used either or MY 2017 refresh look.

Dadhawk 02-04-2016 09:47 PM

As I was catching up on the last 5 pages or so of this thread, it occurred to me that Toyota really missed an opportunity to shut down the Internet with car forum postings...

They should have announced they were closing down Scion, then an hour later announce they were rebranding all the cars EXCEPT the FRS as Toyota.

The FRS would be the halo car for Daihatsu in North America!

Model changeover is usually early summer to late summer. They will be Scions until then. Without knowing what the refresh looks like without camo, I'd be hard pressed to decide right now. Wait until the refresh is shown.

I fail to understand how the basic concept that the car is just changing a badge is so hard to grasp. People seem to think that Scion made the damned things themselves.
Ya the 17s will be different but they would have been even if still Scion.

Seriously though.

I heard the only reason Scion got it and not Toyota in North America was specifically because Jack Hollis specifically vied for it to be part of the Scion brand because he knew enthusiasts would be all over it.

Don't know and don't care why Scion had it. It has always been a Toyota/Subaru bastard child that changed it's name to fit in in North America anyway. All Scions were Toyotas and always have been. Just like trying to say a 'Vette is not a GM because it has a Chevy badge on it.

Last thing I've heard is that it is going to be the Daihatsu FR-S :bellyroll:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ihatsubaru.jpg

KR-S 02-05-2016 12:50 AM

I'm not sure if this was already posted and I don't really feel like looking through several pages to find the exact link to determine if I'm not reposting it.

Even if I am though, here's to save some people the trouble of looking back anyway:

https://www.scion.com/faqs#scion_bra...sfer_to_toyota

I was hesitant on posting this link since everything is still early and things could change, but this is direct from the Scion website. Apparently, all Scion cars will retain their names and will remain monospec at least for the 2017 model year.

dnieves 02-05-2016 06:08 AM

Takeaways:

So for MY17 you'll still need to change FR-S to 86 but you won't have to waste money on Toyota badges as they'll already be there.
Q
What will happen to Scion products?

A
The following vehicles will be re-badged as Toyotas and will retain their names:
  • FR-S
  • iM
  • iA

MY17 should be the last of the tyrannical monospec and questionable Pure Price.
Q
Will Toyota dealers still be using Pure Price and Pure Process Plus?

A
For MY17, the iA, iM and FR-S will remain monospec and a single price. After that, we will evaluate how pricing for those vehicles as Toyotas will be carried out. Regarding Pure Process Plus, it’s specific to Scion so it won’t be available at Toyota dealers.

I don't like the Toyota logo. It still looks like a chrome uterus to me.

I was about to swap my badges the other day but I didn't at the last second and I guess I saved money. I still want to buy blacked out scion emblems though cause I hate the plastids on mine right now.
