Engine tick

My car started making this noise today. Or I just noticed it. Wanna know if this is normal. Below video is not my car but its the same sound. I only hear it during idle.

Sounds normal to me.

I don't even have to watch this. DI (direct injection) makes a ticking sound its normal, it is also fairly loud on our cars. Don't worry the crickets will drown it out soon enough

Thanks to all!

I noticed this a few weeks ago and have been wondering and searching as well. The video captures it perfectly. Wish there was a simple way to get rid of this diesel clatter...

Can DI be disabled at idle somehow?

Can DI be disabled at idle somehow? You can but why would you want to do that? You will only lose power and fuel economy

Thanks for replying. I thought is was normal I just wanted to confirm.

Well, don't need much power and I don't think economy is improved much at idle.

Why does DI kick in at idle, anyway? While sitting at a signal, the engine will be idling fairly quietly then all of a sudden the clattering starts.

Yes there is a special setting. Turn your key counterclockwise one click.

It is all part of Toyota's DS4 injection. DI comes on when the car is warmed up for idle as a DI will burn nicer then PI during idle. Mainly for fuel economy and environmental laws and that garbage. You can tune it out if you want but PI helps delivery better low end torque then DI. PI is also used in the high RPM's for extra fuel delivery

Direct injection is more precise than port injection, you can get a better air-fuel mixture more precisely straddling the line between rich and lean and minimizing exhaust emissions. You both avoid over-fueling the cylinder (wasting fuel) and leaning it out (not maximizing power) as well as running ultra-lean to save fuel and running rich to advance timing and increase power depending on the needs at that time. While the DI is squirting just the precise amount of fuel into the cylinder to nail the air-fuel ratio a port injection system is spraying more fuel than is needed as some of the fuel sticks to the walls of the intake and head and valves as it travels into the engine.

Comparing direct injection to port injection is like comparing port injection to carburetors. The differences are small today (i.e. early port injection in the 70's and 80's) but will be big tomorrow (today's port injection vs. pretty much any production carburetor).

Early stories on the 86 had claims that without Toyota's D4-S system the FA20 would peak at about 120 horsepower in order to meet emissions requirements. I'll take a little noise and a bump in price tag for 80hp.

@Riftur thanks so much for posting video, my BRZ was making a similar noise and I think this might be it. I'll still have Subaru confirm when I get my oil change though.
