Engine noise after header install?
So i just installed a Borla UEL header and that while the UEL sounds great from the exhaust (Invidia N1 catback), i'm hearing a lot of noise coming from the engine area. It's a bit of a raspy, air-y, type rattle. it almost sounds like intake sound but to the rhythm of the UEL rumble, however i'm on stock intake. Am i just crazy and noticing this or could i potentially have an issue? It's most noticeable when giving throttle at low RPM's (2-3k ish).
I could just be paranoid, or it could be normal. I've really only heard the UEL on WRX's and such so typically there's a bit of turbo sound along with it, however to me this does not seem normal. I'm also running the Invidia N1 catback. Any ideas? |
Of course there would be more noise.. it's thin-walled tubular manifolds without heat shields. Stock are thicker with a substantial heat shield.

The wooshy noise is normal.

Well that's good news. Thanks for the information.

This is normal and has been covered many times. This is a result of the thinner metal of the aftermarket header which doesn't 'hide' the air flowing sound as well as the factory header does. You are fine.

Had the noise when I ran an OFH, now have a Tomei UEL and haven't heard it. My guess is because the Tomei is the same thickness as the factory manifold? even when I heard it with the OFH it was very feint.

As everyone else said, its the header which is thinner (ligther as well as a consequence) that doesnt mask the sound. The Tomei is a very thick header so it does not have the same sound.

I had the same with my borla and revworks.
When wrapped the revworks quieted down a lot, unsure of long term durability of wrap but I suppose I will see. |
I also wondered if my header had a leak or something... just takes a bit of getting used to. Mine were leak tested etc when installed so I know they're fine - and after driving a bit I love the new sound (I just have header and OP - not the rest of the exhaust yet, so ALL my noise comes from the front)
